Postpartum Depression

The nighttime blues

I only delivered 2 days ago and noticed the past few nights that I want to cry before bed(or lack there of). I know I am fully exhausted and it is more of a feeling that I am scared of my husband and I being all on our own without the help of nurses, etc. Did anyone else feel that way? I also felt this way when we drove away from the hospital and when my family left from visiting tonight. I am hoping its just hormones and facing a new, exciting reality and not the start of postpartum blues.

  • My DD is almost 9 months old now. But I remember I used to start getting anxious when the sun started to go down, and then when it got dark outside I would start bawling, everynight for a good 3-4 weeks after we came home from the hospital. For me it was more the fear of SIDS. I had to stay awake so I could watch my DDs chest rise and fall to make sure she was breathing, over and over again! I barely slept the first few weeks, nor did I eat!!! After the month mark came and went, and I was still feeling anxious, I went to my doctor, I had PPD. The doc put me on meds and within a week I was back to my normal self. But you are only at 2 days PP, so I would give it a few more days.. It could just be those pesky hormones!! Good luck, I know how you're feeling. It is scary at first, but it does get easier!

  • My hormones went crazy for the first two weeks after giving birth.  I'd cry at the drop of a hat.  I'd cry when i was happy, I'd cry when I was sad, I'd cry when i was frustrated.  I even cried at the pediatrician's office after a bad day with DD.  I cried more in those two weeks then I did when I was pregnant!  My DD is 3 weeks old today and the weepiness is mostly gone.  Your body (and your life) is going through a lot of changes right now.  Let it out, but if it lasts longer than a few weeks I'd say talk to your doc.

    THIS EXACTLY!

Consider reaching out to your OB or PCP now. Get the motions going and let someone know what's going on. It's never too early to talk with someone.
