Food Allergy

is there a test for peanut allergies - could slight wheezing be the only symptom?

I am having an issue with my lo where he will occasionally wheeze when inhaling, usually while laughing and cruising.  I went to the pedi and inquired to see if he thought it was asthma, he checked his lungs and said everything looks good.  Could it be a peanut allergy?  This is the only symptom that I have seen, but it did start soon after I introduced peanut butter (I have given him peanut butter at least 10 times since I introduced it since I didn't think it was related until today).  Can I test for this?

  • I think its possible that its a peanut allergy, but also possible that its asthma.  I would get a referral to a pediatric asthma/allergy specialist and have further discussions.  Until then, I'd hold off on the PB.  And, they definitely can test him for the potential peanut allergy.  Was your son doing the wheezing when you took him to the pedi?  My son has asthma, but he only has "attacks" (wheezing) during illnesses.  So, his lungs sound perfectly normal any other time.

Does he only do it after eating peanut butter? I think that if PB was causing wheezing he would have some type of reaction on his skin with it, the only time my son had a respiratory reaction (sneezing/coughing), with a food he was allergic to, he broke out in hives shortly after he started coughing.  I would probably try to hold off on the PB and see if he still has the wheeze.
He started doing it about 1 week after I introduced peanut butter.  He has had a little rash on his upper back, but I thought it was a heat rash, but maybe it could be related. . . . .  I will definitely take out the peanut butter and see if things change.

thanks for the reply, I would like to see a specialist, but the ped that I saw made it sound like it was too soon to diagnose anything.  He was not doing the wheezing there, he has never been sick before so I don't know what his breathing would be like then, I will cut out pb for now, I just hate not knowing what is causing this.  I gave him a pb sandwich for lunch today and the wheezing seemed more intense this afternoon along with 2 runny diapers after lunch, while he usually only poos 1/every few days.

Definitely take out PB for a bit..  if the breathing gets better than it's most likely PB.. i would request a test and avoid pb in the mean time.

And yes, wheezing can be a symptom. It's a pretty severe symptom.

I am definitely going to take out the pb and see if it helps, I read that wheezing can be a symptom, but the wheezing is so sporadic and incosistent that I even ignored it for a bit, it never has been directly after peanut butter exposure until today, I honestly don't even know if it is really considered wheezing, but it is a strained sound when inhaling, but only for about 3 breaths at a time a few times a day.  Not sure if that matters, but everyone else I talk to says to ingore it, but none of those people have children with peanut allergies so I know this is a great place to ask

never ignore a mothers gut feeling.  If it turns out nothing -than awesome! but what if it's something? better be safe than sorry.  I had a bad gut feeling about my son and ignored it for 7 months until it landed us in the ER b/c he had an anaphalectic reaction.. follow your gut.
