Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Is this teething or something else?

LO started off a little fussy and I thought she was hungry so I tried to nurse her. As soon as I put her on the boppy to nurse she started crying so I took her off, obviously not hungry. The crying quickly escalated to scream crying/pain crying. The only other time I saw her cry like this was when she got her two month vaccinations, and even then I was able to nurse her to soothe her. I tried nursing her this morning during this episode and it made her cry/scream even louder (usually she is comforted by nursing-very odd behavior for her).

she continued this and there was literally nothing DH and I could do. Finally he put her in her car seat and she calmed down briefly and fell asleep for a nap. Is this teething? I thought 3 months was pretty early for teething. We've been noticing that when she is fussy sometimes she will kind of pull on her ear like her jaw is bothering  her. Oh and during this episode I took her temp and it was fine.

It kills me when she cries like that... :(

Re: Is this teething or something else?

  • DD had done something similar to this at about 3.5 months.  She screamed and cried like I'd never heard before.  Wouldnt nurse or anything, either.  I think she had some bad gas that she couldn't get out because she was squirming, arching, kicking... Eventually I held her vertically, rubbed her back and shushhed her for an hour until she calmed down.  I also took her diaper off of her to loosed up the waist area on her.

If she's pulling on her ear or jaw, though couldn't it be an ear infection?  Might get that checked on.

During this episode she wasn't pulling on her ear, but she has been periodically throughout the past few weeks. I thought ear infection at first, but she is STTN and is generally happy, but when she has been fussy a few times she will pull on her ear.

  • could be teething or an ear infection or just fussiness. Teething can often take weeks so its not uncommon for it to start at 3 months as they move up.

  • I remember a couple episodes like this when DS was around 3 months. We thought it was teehing (or the onset of) and he just got his first two teeth last week (he is now a week shy of 6 months). Im not sure if maybe they just feel pain much earlier than the teeth actually coming in, or maybe she was just extremely tired, and couldnt settle herself down for a nap?

  • Mason had a few episodes like this and got two teeth shortly after at 4 monthsexactly. It is a little early, but some babies do get teeth this early. My LO is an example.

  • My lo is like this too.  I have found that sometimes if I freeze a soothie (nuk, binky, paci...whatever you wanna call it) and pop it in, it helps.  The only thing I will say, is don't keep it in the freezer too long.  Anywhere from 5-10 minutes should do the trick.  It doesn't stay cold long, but it's definitely soothing.

  • i really doubt it's teething. In my opinion it's just what a 3 month old does. as long as she stopped and is OK then it's fine. they get fussy, unhappy, shocked (scared) vy all things around them. Don't overthink it.

Same.  Liam has 2 teeth and he'll be 4 months tomorrow.  I'd give some tempra/tylenol if LO is in pain - and it sounds like it!!  Liam generally will settle immediately after having the meds and then sleep for a few hours.  Good luck!!!

  • My baby has 2 teeth at 3.5 months. She wouldn't nurse for a week. So, from my experience, It's definitely possible.
