Breastfeeding

Only producing 10 ml each time I pump....

My baby is now 1 week old and despite being full term she is premie size (4lbs 12oz) and has trouble latching.  I'm pumping and supplementing with formula.  I'm concerned that I'm not producing enought for her as I am only able to produce around 10 ml in 20 minutes of pumping.  She currently eats just shy of 2 oz at each feeding.  Is there anything I can do to increase my supply?  Pump more often, or longer?

  • Pump more often if you can, and only supplement if you need to. Try lots of skin-to-skin contact, even if you're not nursing, and keep trying to get her to latch. A nursing baby can remove more milk than the pump, and will help your supply ramp up, too. Be sure you're drinking lots of water and resting as much as you can, too. GL!

  • Keep pumping, Pump after every feeding. Pump for 15 minutes AFTER the milk stops -- the sucking motion will make your body produce more. Do "power pumps" once a day (that's 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off for an hour/hour and a half).

Get LOTS of rest, drink LOTS of water and make sure you're eating regularly.

Also, don't worry too much. 7 days is not very long for your milk to come in, It's probably just not in fully yet. I started pumping due to suppressed lactation when my baby was 10 days old and for the first week or so I never got more than 10 ml with every pump (combined). At my peak, I was getting 3 ounces per breast, which isn't a lot compared to many of the ladies here, but it's apparently sufficient.
