Steaming fruit Q ?

In an effort to save time and always have some fruit ready for DS to eat, would it be possible to steam several batches of fruit (apples, peaches, etc)to soften them, and then put them in the fridge until I use them? Would they stay soft or harden back up? They would be cut into pieces for him to feed himself, not used for purees or anything. Silly question, but I just wanted to know if anyone has tried this. Thanks!

  • They will stay soft but the problem is they will only stay good for 3-4 days so you would have to do really small batches and use them up quickly. If you can do that then it would work just fine. Also the apples will brown a bit just because they will be peeled and are in contact with the air. You can add a few drops of lemon juice and that will help.

  • you could freeze them in individual servings. That's what we do w/ both purees and now chunkier pieces for finger foods. That way it's good for 3 months.

  • I would also freeze them in individual servings.  we've started doing that with some fruits and veggies for dd as she moves away from purees.

  • I've steamed them, pureed and kept in the fridge for 2 days or so and it worked fine. Don't know why it would be any different if you did the same thing without the pureeing part.

  • I also recomend freezing if you are making more than 2-3 days worth.

I tried steaming apples whole this week. It worked. I did whole, unpeeled apples, so I don't have to worry about them turning brown. Still used them in a couple days to make sure they didn't ferment, but it was almost like having applesauce snack cups in the fridge. I just sliced them open and scooped the inside out for Joseph's breakfast.
