Too early for an ultrasound?

Hello! I'm new to this board!

I'm just about 5 weeks and tomorrow I have my first dr appointment, is this too early for an ultrasound? Of course I have a million things running through my mind and I want to make sure that everything is okay with the baby, but not sure if it's too early tell.

Re: Too early for an ultrasound?

  • I doubt you will have one, it is definitely too early to see anything much.  My doc won't give early ultrasounds before 7 weeks because she said that the you are very unlikely to see much before then and she doesn't want to get anyone upset over nothing,

  • Yes.  You might see a gestational sac and yolk, but likely you won't see baby and heartbeat.  With DS I went at 6w3d and nothing, I went the following week and there he was with his heart beating away.  I would wait so you don't freak out if you don't see anything.

  • Hi Kiyoko! Yes, you are a little early to see much with an ultrasound. If your doctor does perform an U/S, you MAY see a gestational sac and a yolk sac. 6-8 weeks is generally when most people start seeing a fetal pole/heart beat. Your doctor may do blood work and test your hcg and progesterone levels though. Good luck :)

We have ours at 6.5 weeks and got to see the heartbeat!  :) So exciting! :)

  • At 5 weeks all you would see is an empty gestational sac most likely.  I had an u/s at 5w4d just to see how many sacs there were since we did IVF and they had put in 3 embryos.  The heart usually starts beating on day 30 (with day 1 being the day the egg and sperm met) so that would be 6 weeks gestational age.

  • I'm not having mine until next week and I'll be 9 weeks and 3 days along by then. My doctor said that if we did it too early there wouldnt be much to see.

  • I had one-time spotting last week, so my doctor is ordering an u/s for next Thursday.  He's having me wait so I will be 6 weeks 2 days.  He is not really concerned, but wanted to put my mind at ease.  He made me promise I won't be upset if there isn't a heartbeat yet. Good luck!

  • As others said, most (not all) doctors don't order/do ultrasounds that early. They usually do them early for dating, IVF, if something *might* be wrong, or maybe it's just their practice - but I think it's quite rare, at least from reading the boards here.

I had one at 6 weeks as a dating U/S because my irregular periods made it impossible to date otherwise. I didn't even KNOW I was 6 weeks until they found my little one. I will say though, it was great to see the little bean and it's little heart beat.
