Ugh, Gabe has a hernia. Surgery will be scheduled in the next month or two. I am so bummed. I hate the thought of them cutting into my little guy. We'll be hearing back from surgery for a consult appt at the children's hospital in the next few days and then they will schedule the ultrasound.
He was 5lb14oz today and got his 2 month shots and finally got his HepB shot (he had been too small until now).
Re: hernia?
Oh no!! How did they discover that?
I'm so sorry to hear about the surgery. You'll have a lot of support from all of us here, though
She was checking to see if his testicles had descended (all the doctors an nnps always check that) and she found it. It is so weird though, they didn't say anything at all about it last Tuesday at his special care clinic follow up at the hospital. In fact, the neo last week even made it a point to point out how something that looked like a hernia wasn't.
The pediatrician today told us that they often just pop up and that he very well didn't have it last week. Thankfully it wasn't restricted and everything that was going into his scrotum was easily pushed back into his abdomen. So, it isn't emergency surgery (but, it isn't elective either...she made that clear).

Oh that's a bummer! Poor Gabe!
Do you know anything about the surgery yet? (((HUGS)))
Not really. My brother had a hernia when he was 5 and had surgery. But, I don't really remember it.

I'm so sorry he has to have surgery! Hopefully it will be easy and he will recover quickly.
Keep us posted!
Our precious girl, born at 27 weeks.

FWIW, JS's started as a hydrosomething and his testicle was late to descend. Everyone has told us they are common in preemies.
And be prepared - JS has to stay the night. Preemies are more likely to A, B & D after anesthesia.
They saw a hernia on one of my boys right before he got discharged. They told me he must have surgery after discharge but he was on oxygen and I was given the option to wait until he is off it to try later so that he might not have to stay overnight. Well last month we decided now is a good time. I noticed that I havent seen it in the past few months and after his doctor checked him out she said she thinks it went away and to get a second opinion. We've seen a urologist also and he thinks it was never really a hernia to begin with.
This is just my experience but I believe he had something that looked like a hernia and they never did an ultrasound or anything to make sure. I was glad I waited and didnt risk him going into surgery when he was so small and who knows what would have happened if I did choose to do it 6 months ago.
Evan had a large one that was high risk of getting trapped so he had surgery at 6lb 8oz and just under term adjusted. He was still on oxygen, a monitor, and caffeine at home. He went in late evening one night just to get admitted and settled. Early the next morning they intubated him for surgery, the surgery went fine, but it took until the next morning to get him back off the vent, that was probably the hardest part. By that afternoon he was taking full feeds by bottle again and we were discharged home. He was more fussy than usual for a few days, we tried to keep up on tylenol to help him, but otherwise had no trouble. His scar is so fine now that even doctors have to really look to see it. I think it was in the Preemies; The essential guide for parents of premature infants book that I read that hernia repair surgeries are the most common surgeries done on children and have a very low complication rate.
It always stinks when they need surgery. I hope it goes well for him.
Kevin had hernia surgery too - they knew about one hernia in the NICU, delayed surgery until he was nearly 2 months adjusted because they were worried about putting him back on the vent. The surgery went smoothly and I was so thrilled to find him off the vent in the recovery area! I thought for sure he'd be stuck back on that vent again.
I hope the surgery goes well. Keep us posted!
