Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone give carrots as a first-ish food?

Can I get a yay or nay for trying carrots with my 5 month old? Earth's Best lists it as a stage one, so I bought a bunch, but wholesomebabyfood.com said no and now I'm just confused! Earth's Best also listed peas as a first food, and I tried it without looking at my baby food bible, and he seems to have survived...

  • I made all of DS1's food, and carrots were the first one I did.  I thought I remembered that one being one the pedi said could be first.  Like a year later I was talking to SIL about it and she said her pedi said to wait on carrots because of nitrates.  It seems like everyone you ask will tell you something different.  I think you're fine.

  • It is high in nitrates but I think they prepare it so that it is not as high.  If you make it yourself you use fresh water to puree instead of the liquid you cooked it in as with other veggies.  I'm sure it is fine :)

  • We started with carrots, because that's what our family doctor suggested.  I pureed it with formula rather than the cooking liquid.  I do that with all the baby food I've made so far.  The carrots weren't as big of a hit as the butternut squash though.

  • We did it. & I thought I remember WBF saying to just not use the water [from steaming or boiling] to blend the carrots with [because of the nitrites]?

  • We are doing it this week as prob her 6-7th food. I make all of mine, but bought Gerber organics for carrots due to the nitrates suggestion. My Your Baby's First Year Week By Week book specifically states not to try making carrots at home.

  • We tried carrots yesterday...She loved them. Also had some for lunch, we're waiting four days to  try sweet potatoes in case shes allergic, but there are very few allergies in our families.

  • They were the first things I gave M.  She's still alive.  Our pedi said just make sure to peel them, and not to use the cooking water.

The nitrates aren't as big an issue as they are made out to be.  And the nitrates come from the soil they're grown in, so whether or not they're organic doesn't mean anything IRT nitrates.  Any baby old enough to eat solids should have a mature enough digetsive system to handle any nitrates from carrots.
