Babies: 9 - 12 Months

XP from 6-9: traveling/sick/WTH is this... HELP!

A couple of days ago DS started getting really fussy... crying in car seat, needed to be distracted, tugging ears, hand always in mouth and then yesterday we flew to visit family and he is not any better... he cries when nursing, wakes up crying (He doesn't wake at night though!) .... cries all the time!! There has barely been a time when he has been happy for more than 30 mins. He kinda calms when he is in my arms, but not totally... he still fusses.... advil kinda works, but teething meds dont... tried the pellets and orajel.

Here's the vent part. I think something is wrong...  but everyone else has their GD opinions and it's driving me crazy.... "Just leave him alone" "He's fine, he's just in a new place" "He just wants mom, go take a break somewhere" "Maybe he's tired, maybe he just needs a walk, maybe he's hungry..." ARGH!

I need mommy opinions: What do you think it is?? Teething? Ear infection? Stranger anxiety? I am really tempted to take him to the doctor... we are here for 16 days, and he really as only met one new person and he is getting worse... this started BEFORE we got here. He also got an ear infection the last time we traveled by plane... not sure if they are related.

  • Take him to urgent care or if you know of a pediatrician that would fit him in take him there.  You'll both feel better.  Wal-green's has a PA run clinic in some towns.  I've gone to those when I was out of town and got sick.

  • Since it started before you left, I would say ear infection and/or teeth.  They can go hand-in-hand.  I say ear infection because of the tugging on the ears, and teeth because of the hand in the mouth.  My DD tugs on her ears all the time, but it's not ear infections (pedi has checked).  It's just her thing.  If this isn't the norm for your DS, I would try to find a walk-in clinic before flying back, just to make sure.  I would also go a few days before you fly, just in case he needs antibiotics.  They will have a couple of days to set in.

And as far as the unwanted advice...I'm still getting used to it, but I'm slowing accepting that it won't stop and they mean well.

  • If it were me, I would take him in in case it is an ear infection.  I would think otherwise its teeth. Maybe that will get other people off your back too?  I'd just straight up tell them to knock it the eff off...but I am a jerk like that.

I am totally getting to this point. I think I may take him to... somewhere!!

  • Take him to the Doctor.  I could have written this same thing a week ago.  I finally took him in, and his ears/nose/throat were fine... but he was running a fever.  Doc couldn't figure it out, thought maybe it was a virus, But finally she did a chest xray and discovered he actually had pneumonia.  His ONLY symptom was a fever.

I realize this is rare, but my point is, if your baby isn't being your baby, YOU know best- take him in and don't let anybody make you feel bad for that.

Worst case scenerio- doc says everything checks out fine and he's just a teething monster.... but at least you will feel better about knowing you tried to help him.

Ignore the dumb people! :) Good Luck Momma!

Just to add- his only symptom was a fever, however, he was NOT himself.  He is normally a great sleeper, and he was sleeping awful, he wanted to be held all of the time, and he was super cuddly (which is great, but not his normal self).  He didn't want to play as much, he seemed annoyed with some of his favorite foods, etc.  He was just... not the baby I knew.

Also- if he had an ear infection, flying would have made it feel much worse, with the pressure changing and stuff.... I'll stop being a comment whore now. :):):)
