If I am inviting 40 guests but don't know how many how many cupcakes should I order?

4 dozen. Cupcakes freeze well or you could send a few home with guests if there's really a lot left over.

We're having 30 guests, and I plan on making 4 dozen (but we're not serving a cake, just cupcakes).

They usually sell by the dozen, so I'd get 4 dozen.

If all 40 end up coming I'd get more than 48 cupcakes. That means everyone only gets 1. I'd order 5 dozen to be safe.

We are having 40 adults and 11 kids and I'm making about 9 dozen--3 different kinds. I know for a fact that some of the kids will have 2 (my nephew pouts when he only gets 1 of anything), and so will some of the adults.
