Lately I keep hearing about sip and sees? Is this something more common in the south? What exactly it is? Is it basically a baby shower for once the baby is born?

It is not a baby shower. It is more of a meet and greet for ladies to "sip" on punch and "see" the baby.
It is very popular for a grandmother in the South to host (or her frineds host) a sip and see to introduce the baby after her new grandchild it born. Gifts are not required but most ladies usually bring something. However, the gifts are more heirloom items, not registry items. Things like silver cups/ rattles, smocked dress/ day gowns, etc.
Interesting. I have never heard of this in KY, people north of here consider us southern and people south of here consider us northern so I'll be interested to see the responses.

a few of my friends have done this, they either call it a sip and see or a pop party. a lot of people in my circle don't have showers (jewish tradition) and many times a lot of people can't make it to the bris (has to happen 8 days after birth health of the baby permitting) or the naming (a lot of more observant jews do the naming the saturday after the baby is born) so this is just a fun way to have a little more lead time to celebrate the baby.
I live in NC and I haven't heard of this. I guessed based on the title that it was a drop-in baby shower with smallish gifts after the baby was born, such as for a 2nd or later child.

Yep, exactly. My MIL hosted one after Henry was born.

LOL, I'm from KY and I TOTALLY agree with this.
Anyway, my sister and mom (from KY ) threw us a sip n see for DS. The guest list was our friends and, while some did bring gifts, we tried to stress that they not. The point, for us, was to celebrate his safe arrival, especially since we didn't let anyone throw us a shower beforehand due to anxiety issues because of our bad history.

Me neither!!

One of my mom's friends threw us a sip and see. It was a very nice catered event (I was shocked she spent so much!)
And yeah, the gifts we received were clothes, picture frames and a gorgeous handmade quilt.
