Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Tummy Time Regression?

DD has been pretty strong and good at tummy time from an early age. On her 12 week "birthday" she could hold her whole chest up like a baby seal and she even rolled from tummy to back that day. And now at almost 16 weeks she rolls to her sides, sometimes even sleeps on her sides, but has never rolled over again. She also has been getting very lazy at tummy time, and is happy just face-planting instead of lifting. She'll kick her legs or suck on her forearms/fist as she rests her head, but rarely lifts up anymore.

Should I be worried? Is this normal for them to hit a milestone and then not really maintain it? We'll have our 4 month appointment in a few weeks so I can ask then, but just wondered what others mom's experienced.

Re: Tummy Time Regression?

  • I don't know if this will help since they are not the same age but my DD rolled from tummy to back very early (4 weeks). She did it a few times but then stopped doing it for a while. Just in the past few weeks, she's started doing it EVERY TIME I put her on her tummy for tummy-time! (She was 3 months yesterday). I don't think you have to worry but I would ask the dr when you go just to get his/her opinion!

  • I wouldn't be worried about the rolling.  Maybe it was a fluke, and she's just not strong enough to do it consistently yet.  As far as tummy time, try and prop her up  on a Boppy (if you have one) and see if that helps her.  I would probably mention that part to my pedi, just to make sure.

  • DD hasn't rolled over yet, but we've had a pretty similar experience with tummy time. For the first 8ish weeks she was way ahead of all the milestones and was lifting her head and turning it from side to side like a champ. Then for a few weeks whenever I put her down for tummy time, she'd just lie there and suck on her hands. She was also showing no interest in trying to roll either direction. Just the other day, I put her down for tummy time and she lifted her head and chest straight up - more than she's ever done - and even started scooting around a little. She's done the same thing each day since then and is also trying to roll back to tummy now. We did absolutely nothing different than we'd been doing all along. I think they just go in fits and starts - and I've read they can really only focus on mastering one new skill at a time. So maybe your LO is working on something that's a little less visible than rolling right now and will go back to that once she gets whatever other skill or mental leap she's working on now figured out.

  • Thanks! You made me feel a bit better. I'll be asking my pedi, too.
