Recs for signing with LO

Does anyone here sign with their baby?  I'm looking at what books to purchase, but am a little overwhelmed.  I think I'd prefer a book with ASL over made-up signs, but I'm hoping one of you ladies will have some real world advice.

Thanks!

Re: Recs for signing with LO

  • We used videos with Margaux.  I know, tv is awful, but we only did it a couple of times a week to help us learn them too.  :)  We started with these at 10 months:

and now that she's older, she enjoys:

    https://www.signingtime.com/

Both programs use ASL, and I think there are books available with both.  She knows and can use every single sign she has seen, and really enjoyed/enjoys them.

The second series was done by a woman who found out her daughter had profound hearing loss at one year old, so it comes from the heart.  She has a great story.

    Good luck!

  • my library has quite a few board books about baby signing too, so you could check there.  we watched a lot of the 'Signing Time' videos on YouTube for free (the DVDs are super expensive).  we found videos on there also by 'My Baby Can Sign' that we liked a lot too.

aslpro.com is great for just teaching yourself a sign (or search YouTube for a word you want to sign plus "ASL").  lots of ways to do it for free or cheap.  g/l, even at 2.5 when she doesn't stop talking all day, she still can sign too!

  • We are only doing a few signs with our DD. My MIL knows how to sign to she taught us some and lent us a book I think it is called The Joy of Signing. The signs that we are doing are eat, milk, dirty (for dirty diaper), more, and out. We have started doing them already but of course it will be a while before she signs back, but we can get in the habit this way. Once she picks these up we will probably introduce a few more. We also wanted to use ASL and not made up signs so we just made sure to choose signs that a LO is capable of doing with their motor skills. For instance diaper is harder to do that is why we chose dirty instead. Good luck!
  • We started signing with my first son when he was 18 months due to developmental issues and later diagnosed autistic.  My youngest son has been watching Signing Time since he was born and is now a great signer.  He started signing back at around 10 months maybe a little sooner.  We have every Signing Time video and most of the cds.  I would highly recommend them.  They have a baby Signing Time which is 4 dvds, a great place to start.  They also have board books and flash cards as well.   I highly recommend all of their products.
