HSG Tests - Not really reliable?

Hello! I am new to this site. My name is Taylor. My husband & I have been TTC for over 12 months now. We started working with a fertility specialist about a month ago and have since had tons of tests done. One of them was an HSG test to see if my tubes are open. A patient's previous results were still on the Xray screen so I could see what a normal xray would look like. So, when they inserted the dye I could immediately tell my ovaries where not being filled with the dye, thus it looks like my tubes are blocked.

We spoke with the doctor and decided instead of going in for surgery right away we are going to re-test in one month to see if maybe  my uterus was just contracting at the same time, shutting off the tubes. So now we play the waiting game, which is nerve racking.  Has anybody had a hard time with the HSG test? Doing more research, it seems like it is really not that reliable? Most women say the test is extremely painful, but I was just mildly uncomfortable.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you!

Re: HSG Tests - Not really reliable?

  • My HSG itself wasn't too painful, just uncomfortable, but a few hours later I had the most severe cramps of my life.  My HSG was normal, though, no blockages.  Hope your next one comes back with better results.
    Me: 30, Dx Unexplained/hypothalamic amenorrhea
    DH: 31, normal!
    April/May 2011: Menopur + Ovidrel +TI = BFN

  • First of all, welcome!

When I had my HSG, my right tube did not fill.  I think that it is pretty common for the uterus to spasm and prevent the dye from filling a tube.  That's what my RE thinks happened with me (because I have no history to indicate that my tube should be blocked -- like any infections or endo symptoms).  Since I did have one tube that was definitely clear, we went ahead with IUIs.  I've since been given the option to have a lap to see if my right tube is in fact blocked, but my RE said that she did not recommend it because she thinks there's a 90% chance that my right tube isn't blocked.

My HSG was for the most part just pretty uncomfortable, but there were a couple minutes of very sharp pain, and so they stopped it then.

I don't have any advice for you.  My HSG was normal and I didn't have any pain.  I wanted to welcome you to the board.  I'm sorry that you have to be here and hope your stay is short.

My first HSG was done during my lap (so under general anesthesia) and showed both tubes absolutely clear.  I had to have my HSG redone after a year and that one was done in the normal completely un-medicated manner.  My first HSG showed my tubes all clear.  My second HSG showed both tubes blocked.  My RE thinks that the second HSG showed the tubes blocked due to spasm and that if we were to redo the test with a sedative, it would probably be fine.  However, if we redo it with a sedative, we will have everything set up so they can try to clear out minor blockage if they do turn out blocked.

I'm doing IVF right now.  So, I'm not going to do the test and possible unblocking unless this cycle fails.

    Good luck!

P.S.  The RE I'm doing IVF with doesn't like HSGs.  He doesn't usually perform them because he thinks they are unreliable.

  • My RE thinks the same thing may have happened to me as it showed my right tube blocked on the HSG.  I met with two different REs after the HSG and took them my x-rays and they both said that they think my right tube could be open and I may have just been cramping so much that the tube or the uterus closed it off.

My RE did not say to do a repeat HSG but said he could do another type of procedure where they go in with a cather and look into the tube (I cant remember the name of the procedure but it wasnt a lap).  My RE suggested that we try IUIs a few times before checking out the tube as he did not think the procedure was necessary and isnt 100% convinced it is blocked.

Good luck at your next HSG!
