Food Allergy

If your child has a dairy allergy, please come in...

I am going to give my 13.5  month old dairy for the first time today. She had a milk protein sensitivity so we stayed away from dairy until now (I am still nursing and just recently started  alittle dairy myself and so far she has been ok...).... I am hoping she has outgrown it...  If your child is allergic or has a sensitivity, how quickly did you see a reaction after first introducing dairy?  What reaction did they have? (vomiting, bloody stool... etc)  I am so nervous...

Thanks!

  • We gave him yogurt which is supposed to be one of the "safer" choices and he broke out in a rash around his mouth immediately.  Good luck!

  • We also started off with yogurt, but she went into ana within a few bites..... BUT... we had also previously tested for dairy, and came up negative... and she had a little dairy before, including what she got through my BM. Plus the allergist was surprised that she had such a violent reaction to it. So I wouldn't put too much stock into our situation, as it seems a bit rare.

    Good luck!

That is so scary.... She also tested negative through blood work... I guess, my next question is, should I have something in hand in case she does have a bad reaction?  What do I do if she goes into ana?  Call 911? (sorry if this seems like a stupid question...)

Do you happen to have an EpiPen at all? If you do and she does go into ana, then don't hesitate to use it. I also would not hesitate to call 911. If you start to hear weezing or see major swelling (DD looked like she had many Botox injections in her lips), don't hesitate to call.

I would also just keep the Benadryl close by. I actually keep some on the top shelf of my pantry so that I don't have to make the mad dash upstairs... plus I'm not dashing so much these days.

this happened to us too.  She tested negative for on the RAST and blood testing for milk but we ended up at the ER.  We did a food challange and it came back positive.  The testing is not very acurate for LO's our age but I hope I am a rarity too.

  • My DD has a mild dairy allergy that wasn't present a year ago, but has come on gradually over the past year. Her only major symptom was random vomiting either 1 to 2 hours after eating, and it only happened once a week or so. We ruled out a variety of things with testing and anatomy scans, and proceeded with the blood draw. She has a previously known peanut allergy, but the draw came back with her mildly allergic to dairy.

Good luck - I hope it goes well. I'd definitely have some Benadryl on hand just in case.

(Sorry - had to edit a bit for grammar)

  • We gave LO yogurt last weekend for the first time (a very small amount). He seemed ok, but he had some minor digestive issues, so it was a mixed result. We're going to try again this weekend and watch him closely.

Kate has MSPI and we have successfully introduced some soy into her diet.  Nothing major like tofu but, things like waffles with soy as a limited ingredient.

I gave her some homemade biscuit last week that was made with milk - just a bite or two.  Within 4 hours she was throwing up and had horrible runny/ mucusy poop for a few days.  I'm taking that as she hasn?t grown out of her sensitivity/ allergy yet.

  • my guy gets hives within seconds if any dairy touches his skin/face/mouth. He will be unable to have any dairy for a long time as his allergies are caused by a cell disorder, which usually lasts until the teen years :(
