brown/rust colored chunks in spit up???

My LO was eating, pulled off the breast so i burped him. He spit up (he has reflux) and there was all this brown/rusty pink colored stuff in his spit up. I had him eat off the other side and got the same thing. I expressed some milk and it was all white and i don't see any bleeding from me. I pumped 3 hrs later and it was all white.

I took him in to the dr. and these are his exact words "I don't know what to make of it" as he looks at the spitup on the burp rag. He said that he thinks it was from me and that maybe I had some internal bleeding in my boobs. This was after I told him I expressed milk and it was white. My nipples are a little chapped but that is it. Baby is still having wet/poopy diapers.

I just feel like the dr didn't know what it was so he just claimed it was from me. At first he said sometimes spitup that has been digesting awhile can be tinted brown, but I told him no this was during eating, not something that had been digested. He said "Oh". Then he claimed it must be from me.

Has any else experienced colored spit up? My husband thinks the dr knows what he is talking about since he sees babies all the time, but when he said "I don't know what to make of this" makes me a little leary. WDYT?

  • Obviously the doctor isn't pinpointing exactly what it is. If it's from you then how is it getting into the babys mouth and what can you do to prevent this from happening? If there is something wrong with YOU then it's his job to treat the problem.

My best advice is to watch what you're eating and look for another doctor. Stay away from fatty foods, acidic foods, and basically anything that could possibly give the baby reflux.

  • I agree with PP.  I'd get a second opinion.  I don't have experience with this, but my first thought was that brown means "old blood".  The pink could indicate new blood, though.  Someone needs to figure out if it's yours or his, though.  If it is his, do babies get ulcers?  It could be all sorts of things and staying away from anything that could give the baby reflux is good advice, too.  If there's a bleeding ulcer or something, you don't want to irritate it more.  Good luck!
