Cloth Diapering

Questions in general

I am very interested in cloth diapering. Right now I'm only 12 weeks, so I'm just researching, but I had some questions.

When a baby has runny poop, how do u go about rinsing them out? I don't think I'd wanna rinse that into my sink.

If I decide to do them, I'm planning on buying the ones that adjust to sizes for all, so how many should I plan on having in the beginning? I know I will end up buying more as time goes, cuz of cute patterns and such, I was just curious to start with.

What is your opinion on the chemicals in disposables? Enough to actually do permanent harm?

How many of you always use them (during the day and night and also for traveling)? If you use them overnight, are they usually leaking by the time you go to change them?

And finally, how do you actually go about washing them?

If I think of any other questions I will ask, but right now thats all I can think of. I have done some research, I would just like some more opinions. Thanks!

Re: Questions in general

  • When your baby is EBF or formula fed you do not need to rinse at all.  Just dump it in the wash and go!  It dissolves in the water.

The OS diapers probably will not fit your baby for a few weeks or a month or so after birth.  I'm guessing you would want to have around 20 to be safe.  We have like 35 and don't really need that many.

We use our diapers all the time.  I actually bought some disposables as back up and am regretting it because I just don't need them at all.  At night I use my most absorbant diapers.  DD sleeps through the nights with no issues yet.  Fingers crossed!

We store dirty dipes in a pail with a washable liner.  Every other night I dump them in the washer and add the pail liner.  Cold rinse, warm wash with detergent, and another cold rinse.  I hang dry the covers and throw the inserts in the dryer.  They are all clean by morning.  Lay any stained diapers in the sun to remove stain.

Be sure to check out this board's FAQ and watch lots of youtube videos.  That helped me a lot!

When a baby has runny poop, how do u go about rinsing them out? I don't think I'd wanna rinse that into my sink. EBF and EFF poop does not need to be washed, the dirty diaper can go straight into the wash.  When LO starts solids you can get a diaper sprayer that attaches to your toilet and rinse that way.

If I decide to do them, I'm planning on buying the ones that adjust to sizes for all, so how many should I plan on having in the beginning? I know I will end up buying more as time goes, cuz of cute patterns and such, I was just curious to start with.  One Size (OS) diapers usually don't fit until abut 10-12lbs, depending upon the brand and baby.  You may want to consider a newborn stash, you can get good deals on barely used NB diapers.  As for your original question of how many, you should be alright with 18-24.

What is your opinion on the chemicals in disposables? Enough to actually do permanent harm?  I actually don't have a very strong opinion on the chemicals in disposables.  I just like cloth better and figure the fewer chemicals the better.

How many of you always use them (during the day and night and also for traveling)? If you use them overnight, are they usually leaking by the time you go to change them? J haven't had a disposable in the house since J was a month old.  We use CD overnight.  Some options do leak more than others.  Most posters on this board would agree that the most reliable overnight system is super absorbent fitted diaper and wool cover.

And finally, how do you actually go about washing them?  Cold rinse, hot wash with CD safe detergent, cold rinse, dry in dryer or hang to dry.  It's pretty slick.

If I think of any other questions I will ask, but right now thats all I can think of. I have done some research, I would just like some more opinions. Thanks!

Also, there is an FAQ at the top of this board with lots of excellent information, keep asking questions!

I am very interested in cloth diapering. Right now I'm only 12 weeks, so I'm just researching, but I had some questions.Have you seen the FAQS at the top of the board?  It is full of great information!

When a baby has runny poop, how do u go about rinsing them out? I don't think I'd wanna rinse that into my sink.  You do not need to rinse until the baby starts eating solids.  I then use a diaper sprayer and spray into the toilet.  When my LO was a newborn I would just take off poopy diaper and through in my wet bag.

If I decide to do them, I'm planning on buying the ones that adjust to sizes for all, so how many should I plan on having in the beginning? I know I will end up buying more as time goes, cuz of cute patterns and such, I was just curious to start with.  The one sizes will not fit until your baby is about 10-12 lbs.  A lot of people will do fitted or prefolds and covers for the newborn stage.  Once you get to one size diapers I would have about 18-24.

What is your opinion on the chemicals in disposables? Enough to actually do permanent harm?  I think they do harm.  I have read studies that baby boys who are much more likely to be infertile.  I guess the disposables keep their balls too warm which causes long term harm.

How many of you always use them (during the day and night and also for traveling)? If you use them overnight, are they usually leaking by the time you go to change them?I like to use them full time.  I actually find that with the right cloth combination they are much less likely to leak overnight than disposables.

And finally, how do you actually go about washing them?I take my wet sack and dump them all into the wash.  I do a rinse and then a hot wash with an extra rinse.  I wash about every other day.

If I think of any other questions I will ask, but right now thats all I can think of. I have done some research, I would just like some more opinions. Thanks!

  • When a baby has runny poop, how do u go about rinsing them out? I don't think I'd wanna rinse that into my sink.

DS was EBF until just past 6 months. So I just folded the dipe in half and put it in the pail. I wash every 1.5 - 2 days. Now that he is on solids as well as breastmilk, he has half his dipes as watery and half are somewhat solid poos, solid enough that I can just pick it up with TP and plop it into the potty.

If I decide to do them, I'm planning on buying the ones that adjust to sizes for all, so how many should I plan on having in the beginning? I know I will end up buying more as time goes, cuz of cute patterns and such, I was just curious to start with.

I'm no help here- I had 15 OS adjustables to start. None of them fit him until he was close to 15 pounds. So then I started collecting other brands to try out.

What is your opinion on the chemicals in disposables? Enough to actually do permanent harm?

    No. We disposable dipe overnight.

How many of you always use them (during the day and night and also for traveling)? If you use them overnight, are they usually leaking by the time you go to change them?

If we do use CD overnight, I would have to change him every 3 hours. He even leaks out of the disposables. It is maddening.

He goes through a clean CD every 2-3 hours right now.

And finally, how do you actually go about washing them?

    Rinse/spin
    Wash
    Extra rinse
If needed, another rinse (rarely needed)
Sun dry or dry in dryer. No fabric softener.

  • When a baby has runny poop, how do u go about rinsing them out? For exclusively breastfed newborns, you just throw all your diapers in the wash. Formula fed newborns or older babies you can just use a diaper sprayer (trust, you will want one) and spray everything into the toilet.

If I decide to do them, I'm planning on buying the ones that adjust to sizes for all, so how many should I plan on having in the beginning? One size diapers won't fit newborns, usually. But, 24 is a good one size stash. You might try prefolds/flats for the newborn stage since it's cheap. (I used 4 covers, 2 snappis, and 24 prefolds for the first 4 months of LO's life)

What is your opinion on the chemicals in disposables? Enough to actually do permanent harm? This is what mainly made my switch to cloth. Its  not a risk that's worth taking in my book.

How many of you always use them (during the day and night and also for traveling)? If you use them overnight, are they usually leaking by the time you go to change them? I only use sposies when we go out of town, and even then not always. (access to laundry room or not) Around 5 months, she started peeing HUGE amounts, and we did have issues finding a night time solution. (we even tried disposables at night) Eventually we came across Applecheeks, which have been a godsend for us. (1 Microfiber and 2 Applecheeks inserts) Since then, we've been leak free.

And finally, how do you actually go about washing them? Heaviest load cycle, heaviest soil level, prewash, extra rinse. Use a diaper sprayer to get solids out. I wash all of mine together. Also, I put all of mine in the dryer (against reccomendations) for time/kill bacteria. (my dryer has an antibacterial setting)

  • First - when you are EBF or Formula feeding the poop is water soluble.  It all just gets thrown in the wash.  When you start solids is when you need to worry about spraying or scraping.

Second - The one size diapers probably won't fit until your baby is 10-12 pounds.  So, you will probably want to think about a newborn stash and a OS stash if you want to go that route.  I did part time cloth until she fit into the OS.

Third - I don't have an opinion on chemicals in sposies, I don't know enough about them to comment.

Fourth - Once she fit into the OS (at 6 weeks/11 pounds), I started CDing all the time.  Day, night and travelling.  I have even gone camping in a tent for a few nights and CDed.  Overnight, I am still looking for my nighttime solution that works.  But, I have never had a leak, she just wakes up every 3 hours.  But, I don't know if that is from age or diapers or she just doesn't want to STTN.

Fifth - My wash routine with Tide Original Powder is one cold rinse, hot wash, two cold rinses.  I don't always do the first cold rinse.  I hang the covers to dry and put the inserts and prefolds through the dryer.

There is a FAQ at the top of the board that may have more answers to the questions you asked.

  • Newborn poo is water soluble. You don't rinse. You  just toss the diaper in the wash and it comes out. After you introduce solids, you can swish in the toilet, use a diaper sprayer, or use liners until it becomes ploppable.

You don't want one-size diapers for a newborn. They typically don't fit into them until 10-12 lb. Trust me, it's worth it to have a nb stash. You can always sell them when you're done, and you can always buy used or do a diaper trial.

    I don't know

I use them probably 90% of the time. If you do it right, they won't leak overnight. It took a while to get over the fear of leaks, but really, the worst that will happen is you have to change sheets and clothes. NBD
