I?ve been using Quicken since 1997 to track income and outgo. I love it. I can easily pull up reports that tell me how much we?ve spent overall and in a category over time.  We?ve done a  lot of home improvement projects and I can track those costs and how much we spend on each car.   I can track our savings and investment progress and see at a glance if we?re not on track or need to cut back on say, Health & Beauty.  I do break out individual receipts?Target can have groceries, clothes, H&B and Household in one transaction and I want to know how we do in those areas in particular.  I?ve heard good things about Mint.com, but I?m not sure if the breakout per store is possible.

I know this is dorky and over the top for most families, but I am an accountant (so I dig this sort of thing) and it works great for us.

If you?re new to tracking with software, maybe start with Mint and see how you like it.

  • Thanks!  I knew you would have a wealth of knowledge since you're an accountant and all! :)  I'll try Mint and see how it works.  My H usually deals with all of our money, but he's asked me to step in and help.  I have an abnormal love of organization, so I'm excited to start this!
