Putting the crib in front of window - Safety options?

DD#2 has been sleeping in the co-sleeper thus far but we'll be moving that out and setting up the crib soon. The room is such that we have to put the crib in front of a window. The window is low and comes down so that it's a bit below the top rail and it has blinds which we'll usually keep down. I want to find a way to childproof the window in a way that not only protects her from the pull cords but keeps her from having access to the blinds when she gets older.

I did some searching online and all I found was this mesh window cover. This gave me the idea of buying some mesh fabric and nailing it over both sides of the window so that it completely covers the window. However, I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas or if there are any other products out there.

  • I'd switch out the corded blinds for something cordless, like cordless honeycomb shades. Cordless is the safest option for kids' rooms anyway. (We still have the corded shades that came with our house, but switching them is on my agenda for this month.)

  • Depending on what kind of windows you have, you could also try a temporary film of some kind - I know they make a frosted glass looking kind and I bet they make some darker ones too if you don't want so much light.  I have cordless honeycomb shades I bought at Bed Bath and Beyond, I like the safety factor, but they let a lot of light through and I think they'd be kind of easily torn or messed up if the baby grabbed or kicked them through the crib rails.

  • Thanks ladies. Yeah, I don't think the honeycomb shades are an option for us because she'll move to a different room in a year or two so I don't want to spend money on new shades (there are three large windows in the room). I mainly want something that would prevent her from playing with the blinds from her crib.

I am surprised that there don't seem to be products for this because I can't imagine that I'm the first person having to put a crib in front of a window. Even with the honeycomb shades, it seems like they could play with them, rip them, eat them, etc. It seems like there should be some sort of product for this.

  • I think if you are worried about blinds, I would put a fabric roller shade in the window or just use a curtain.  If you need a temporary solution, I know plenty of people who have just nailed blackout or dark fabric around the window to eliminate light.  Ghetto yes, but safe and effective.
  • you can put a piece of plexi glass over the window where she could reach.  You can probably even attach it with some 3m strips or something.
  • do you have to have blinds? what about just dark curtains?

  • We have plantation shutters, but that may be a more permanent/expensive option than you're looking for.  (Thankfully, they were put in by the prior owners.)

  • Thanks ladies for all of the ideas. I think I'm just going to nail some fabric or a black-out shade over the bottom of the window. It won't look great but it should do the job.
