Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Do you use a drop of lemon juice when making your baby food?

WBF recommends you add a drop or two of lemon juice to prevent browning of certain foods. Has anyone done this? I know it is probably paranoid to think it will case an allergy since the website says there is a difference between giving your kid a few orange slices vs drops of lemon juice, but DS has some eczema on his belly, so I didn't know if that made him more "allergy" prone?

  • Hmm, I've never heard this, but it does make sense, since a lot of baby food has citric acid to maintain the color.  I've never added lemon juice and only certain foods, like bananas and apples, maybe peaches, seem to change color a little bit.  I don't think it hurts the food at all to change color.  I thought it was just for aesthetic appeal, which babies couldn't care less about.  I freeze all the food I make, if that makes a difference- maybe that's why it doesn't change much.

  • I have not added lemon juice.  I usually make the food and immediatly freeze it in ice cube trays.  Even the avacado doesn't really turn color much if it's promptly frozen.  I don't think it would do much harm though.

  • I did this with a mashed avocado...literally 3 drops for a whole avocado, then froze. It didn't brown and you couldn't taste the lemon at all. (I sampled the goods ;))
  • Yes, I think it says add a couple drops to a water bath.  I would have no problem with it.  I froze my banana in slices without the lemon/water bath and it was fine though.  I just did it right away.  I havent frozen any avocado because I usually just eat whatever DS doesnt.

  • I haven't, and have had no problem with food turning brown. I don't freeze avacado. I always just give it to her fresh. It tastes better that way.
