NBR: Work sucks

So.... since I am a pink-slipped teacher (# 415 on the rehire list) I decided to go back for my special ed credential. I found out today I am number 8 (soon to be bumped to # 9) on the special ed list. I am pretty sure there are not that many open positions. Looks like I am spending 22K on another credential and will still be unemployed next year. WTF, I am so bummed. If I do get lucky to get something it will probably be in middle school or high school and a self-contained classroom rather than elementary. I have zero experience in secondary nor do I have any desire to teach secondary.

Re: NBR: Work sucks

  • I'm sorry! I am a teacher too and have had to take a paraprofessional job the past 2 years because of the same thing. Being a teacher right now sucks! I hope you get a job!

  • Thanks, good luck to you too. I just found out there are not 8 positions available, looks like I will be a SAHM (yay) on unemployment (not so yay). Now time to decide if I continue the program or not....22K is a lot to spend for nothing or for a teeny tiny slim chance of MAYBE having something next year (which will be my 3rd year laid off). It really is a gamble and I do not no what to do. If I could go back to 2006 I would have totally chosen a different career path.

  • I would have a hard time spending the money on the program with no guarantee of a job next year. I don't think I would change my career path, but I really just wish there was something out there. I can't see myself doing anything else. What is your ideal teaching position?

  • Oh man, that sucks.  I can't believe how hard it is for teachers nowadays.  Any hope for a long term sub position?  That's what my neighbor is doing right now, and it seems like the only way to ever end up with a permanent position!  How far are you along in your special ed credentials?

  • Ideal position: 4th grade until I am done with my PhD to be a curriculum specialist (my ultimate goal).

Christy- I just started the special ed credential, last Tuesday was my first class.

I have decided to stick it out, it will help me next year ( I hope)!
