Are girls typically 'stockier' than boys?

I don't understand how both my kids are in the 50%ish when my son is rail thin and my little girl is not.

  • In our case DD is definitely stockier than DS (who is a bean pole).    Some of it  might be age some might be body type.

  • DS has always been in the 98% for both hight and weight.

DD has so far stayed in the 90% for height but her weight is less at about 75%. She goes in at the end of the month and I am curious to see where she stands.

    My DD is like this.
  • I feel like girls' clothes are made narrower than boys clothes.  But, my boy is very narrow too and most boys' clothes hang on him now.  A lot has to do with age too.  Kids thin out a lot around 5.  DD is just starting to thin out now and lose some of her baby fat, DS lost his over the school year.
    DS1 age 7, DD age 5 and DS2 born 4/3/12
  • This is true for us.  Though their heights have been about comparable at each age, DD weighed at 18mo what DS did at 3!  She's finally starting to thin out, but I don't expect her to be as thin as her brother.  She's built more like me, and he takes after DH's side of the family.

  • My  DD is. At her 2 yr. check up, she actually weighed less and was taller than DS at the same age, yet he looks like a bean pole and she's got thighs and a belly for days. She just looks softer and rounder than he ever did, and they have been the same ht/wt. compared in age.

Girls, as a group, are smaller and lighter than boys at the same age.

I wonder if what you are comparing is the difference in body type between a young toddler and a school aged kid. That's a big difference. I was looking at DS's pictures as a toddler and was shocked at how chubby his legs were and he was a 25%er.

It would be useful to pull both their growth charts and look at where they both were at different ages instead of comparing apples and oranges.

Your profile picture just made me laugh out loud. Love that smushed face!
