When will you move LO from bassinet to crib?

Or if you have already, when did you make the move?

Gabriella is a tall baby (wearing 6 month clothes at 8 weeks) and is outgrowing the arms reach mini co-sleeper. She sometimes gets her arms and feet out of the swaddle in the middle of the night and starts banging them against the walls of the bassinet. I think it's probably time to move her to the crib.

If you've already made the move, what tips do you have?

Re: When will you move LO from bassinet to crib?

  • today makes 9 weeks for dd and i started putting her in her crib last week. i started for naps and she did just fine as long as she was completely asleep. she took to her crib the first night she was in there and does great. she is also in  6 mo. clothing. so i don't think she had enough room in the pnp. plus we have a bedtime routine. not sure if that helps or not. but she gets a bath at 7:30. eats at 8, kind of sleeps on and off until about 10:30 or 11 and then goes down.

  • My DD just spent her first night in her crib last night! I was just going to post about it! My advice is don't go in the nursery and check on her unless you absolutely have too. My DD may have STTN (which she has done in her RNP a number of times) if I hadn't unintentionally woken her up. So instead she slept 10-2 and 2:30-6:15. Overall, a success!

I tucked a blanket tightly into the sides of the crib and put it at the bottom of her feet. She likes to have something to push her feet against when she sleeps. I also have a mirror in her crib so she can keep herself company (she loves it).

Good luck! I think it's harder for us than them!

  • We made the move at 4 weeks.  Once he dropped one of his nightime feedings.  His room is upstairs and we are down, so didn't want to hike the stairs three times a night.

It really wasn't too bad, slept upstairs in the guest room for a week, and now back in my own bed excpet for the occasional nights when I fall asleep on the couch up there waiting to make sure he is asleep after an early morning feeding.

That first week he still wouldn't nap in there, only in the co sleeper, but now he will not nap anywhere else.

I sleep soooooo much better with him in his own room, and so does he.  GL!

ETA: We did put his crib at an incline, and put a blanket in the shape of a "U" so he feels cozy and doesn't scoot to the bottom of the crib- we put the blanket under the crib sheet.

His three plus my one; we are all excited to welcome a little one!

  • We just set up DD's nursery in our new apartment this weekend!  We haven't moved all of our other things over, so she's still sleeping in her bassinet at our current apartment.  But she'll be moving to her crib when we finally make the final move in the next couple of weeks (likely around 8 weeks old).

  • D is really big for his age. I think I only had him in the bassinet for about a week and a half. He was doing what, I think it was Mrs.D said. Hitting his arms on the side and waking himself up. I started putting him in the crib then and then bringing him into my bed after the first night feeding. Now we've just had him in our bed. Soon I will start putting him in the crib again.
  • I guess I don't really see the need for tips, M sleeps anywhere and everywhere. Bounce seat, bassinet, swing, and crib. I just started putting her down in her crib. If she's not completely asleep I just make sure she has her paci and I shush her and rub her head between her eyes. It konks her out.

The first week we got home from the hospital LO was not happy in his crib. He would fall asleep on me and every time I put him down in the crib he would wake up and start crying. But I kept trying it, even though it was upsetting and frustrating and eventually he just stayed and slept. He has never slept in a bassinet or Pack and Play.
  • We went cold turkey. DD is such a noisy sleeper, and my alarm clock wakes her up in the morning, so we just decided to try the crib one night. She slept so much better! She's STTN now, and we sleep much better too.
  • So it doesn't sound like a lot of people started with naps.. I think I may just be torturing myself.

Did most people find their LO sleeps better/longer in the crib?

  • My DD HATED her bassinet - wouldn't sleep more than an hour or two in there, and those were the good nights, so we switched the crib a couple weeks ago. Between the bassinet and her sleeping on my chest on the couch, we'd had enough and decided to bite the bullet. She sleeps better there than anywhere else!! It's hit or miss, but for the most part, we get about 5 hours out of her in the crib (again, as opposed to the 1 or 2 in the bassinet, this is remarkable!!!).

I'm not sure I have any tips - she just naturally likes it better. We do our normal routine - bath, swaddle, nurse, rock, sleep. She goes down without much of a fuss every night. I slept on an air mattress in her nursery the first few nights so I would be close if she fussed. She does fine. Hopefully you are just as lucky!

*Knock on wood that I don't jinx this* But M has been put down in her crib to sleep the past 2 nights and has slept the longest she's ever slept both nights. The crib is so far, so good!

  • We started putting Grayson in his crib at night when he was 5 weeks old.  Sorry I don't have any tips.  We just swaddle him (like we did when he was in our room in the RNP) and put him down in the crib and turn on the sleep sheep, turn on the monitor and shut the door.  We haven't had any problems.
  • Ours was a fluke. We had moved his bassinet downstairs so my mom could watch him & have him nap in there, so she wouldn't have to walk up and down the stairs.

We came home that night and were too tired to move the bassinet back upstairs, so we just put him in his crib. He slept well in it, so we just kept him in there ever since.
