Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How to get rid of DS waking in the middle of the night?

It seems most people have issues getting their LO's to sleep.  I have no problem there...my issue is that DS wakes up everynight between 1-4am.  I give him a diaper change and he gets a small bottle to just get him back in the sleepy mood.  He goes straight back to bed without fail.  However, now that he is hitting one and we have another baby on the way this Fall I would really like to drop that wake period.  I have tired though not consistantly to just change the diaper without the bottle and he stands up in his crib and screams.  I have been avoiding CIO but I'm starting to think it is my only option.  Some friends recommended the following...I would love your thoughts.

1- When he wakes continue your same routine but switch formula for warm water.  I get the point of the switch but I don't see how this will cause my DS from waking up.

2- Go in and check to make sure the diaper isn't soaked through.  If it is change him.  Give him a pacific and back in crib.  Let him CIO.  If it is not then give him paci put him back in crib and let him CIO.

I think option 2 might actually work but I need the will power to let it happen.  Does anyone else have suggestions?

  • DS has not gotten a bottle or diaper change in the MOTN since about 4 months old.  I'd drop both.  There's no need at this age.

This. Check out a book called "Good Night, Sleep Tight" by Kim West. She uses a different method of sleep training for those not fond of the idea of CIO.  GL

At DD's 9 month appointment the pedi said that as long as she was getting enough calories during the day, she shouldn't have to wake up during the night and should be able to go 12 hours without eating.

We tried giving her water instead. She'd cry for just a few minutes and go back to sleep... turns out she was waking up out of habit because when I stopped nursing and only offered water she stopped waking up within 4-5 days.

Question with this, did you give the water out of a bottle or sippy? DS has for a couple months now been waking up the same way and he gets so worked up if he doesn't get to eat. But he'll be one in a week, I think it's time for him to go back to STTN!

wait did I write this? Everything down to expecting another baby! I just stopped feeding at night. I tried before but he was crying for an hour and then waking up just an hour after I put him down. It seems to be working this time though except he wakes up and cries for a minute or two and goes back down. I actually talked the sleep lady about this on her website and she said that some babies just do that until 2. Ugh. I am still reading the Kim West book but it seems to be more oriented to having issues putting him down to sleep. We have been following the "rules" for going down since 2 months and that isn't the problem Its staying asleep that is the problem!!

We BF so DD never really took a bottle that well. We use sippy cups and she didn't have a problem. We use a couple NUK cups and a straw one.
