Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

help me with my 13 month old

My DD was always a great sleeper, for five months naps and bedtime have been super easy.  Well, as of July 5 that all went down the crapper.  She screams bloody murder whenever I put her in her crib for naps and bedtime.  I have tried to let her CIO but after 30 minutes I couldn't do it anymore, I think she could go all night.  She even wakes up now in the middle of the night screaming.  I have had to have her sleep with us, or sleep on the couch together.  Any suggestions, or have you gone through this with your LO?  TIA

Re: help me with my 13 month old

  • Is she teething? Molars are hell to come in. DD was cracking them for almost a month and it messed with her sleep routine big time. She is back on track now.

If it's only been a few days I would guess that it's either teething or something developmental.  My DS is a little late on walking, but I'm guessing it's coming soon, based partly on what he's doing when he's awake, and partly on his super-crappy napping behavior lately. =)

  • Maybe also separation anxiety? This happened to us around this age. I've read that the anxiety comes back after 1 year.

  • I have read that they start dreaming around this age, and sometimes wake up scared and startled.  I'm not sure that would explain her crying as soon as she's put down, though.
  • My DD would often wake up crying (though not screaming) in the middle of the night.  Turns out, at least recently, it is likely that she has to pee and doesn't want to do it in her diaper.  (We've been EC'ing informally for months, so she's very familiar with peeing on a potty, though she's never been great about it.)  So, I have to take her diaper off, pee her, and put it back on two or three times in the night.  (Usually two at night and then first thing in the morning.  Thank goodness for baby legwarmers!)  It seems to be helping her sleep better otherwise.

I realize this is kinda unusual, but if she's been showing any potty interest, maybe consider it?
