Since our twins will be our first, DH and I are totally lost on some things. What kind of thermometer should we get? We've heard the ear ones are not accurate and that the new "no touch" scanning types are good. What has been your experience?
For the early months we used a rectal thermometer, which is supposed to be the most accurate. We had a Vicks one- I think - that is short, so you can't insert it in too far. We also used a regular thermometer for under their arm. If we got a normal read under their arm, we didn't bother with the rectal.
When they were older- about 8 months, we started using the ear thermometer.
We got a temporal scanner one and I hate it. I find it's super hard to get a good reading. It was okay with new, tiny statue babies that barely moved and will probably be okay with older kids, but right now, it's hard.
We use a good old fashioned rectal if it's really important to get a good reading. Not fun but it's accurate.
We have a digital from Walgreens with 3 interchangable tips. That way we can have a dedicated tip for the rectal readings.
We still use the instant read under arm thermometers we took home from the NICU. We received a temporal as a gift, and while I find it to be accurate, my doc's office usually scoffs at it if I call them because of a fever and tell them I used the temporal. They always ask me to take it with the underarm or rectal.
