Babies: 3 - 6 Months

s/o solids

Why would anyone try to wait longer before introducing solids?  I've heard a lot of people say they don't want to start at 4 or 5 mos- they want to wait at least 6.  Is there a history of food allergies in your family? Is there another reason? Has anyones pedi advised them to wait 6+ mos before starting? If so, is this for fruits and veggies or does it include cereal too?  Just curious...

Re: s/o solids

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics says that 6 months is the optimal time to start solids, and that 4 months is the absolute earliest you should start them, IF they are showing signs of developmental readiness. Some people prefer to follow this recommendation and wait.

I figure there is no rush. Once baby starts eating solids, she'll eat them for the rest of her life, so what's an extra month or 2?

My pedi did mention that she seems like she'll be ready at 4 months, so I'll entertain the idea next month, but my initial instinct is to wait. Not sure yet..

My pedi is recommending 6 months for us because we EBF. The AAP recommendation for EBF babies is 6 months for solids, so that would be one reason. Another would be Baby Led Weaning (or starting purees based on BLW principles), which works off the open gut principle -- babies won't be interested in solids until their intestines are ready for it and they lose their tongue-thrust reflex, which starts at 6 months on average, though if your 5.5 month old reaches for your food and shoves it in his or her mouth to eat, that indicates their readiness a bit early. One more would be babies who eat solids have stinkier poop and who wants to rush that? :D It usually includes all foods, including cereal, though a lot of people who wait for 6+ months skip cereals altogether.

  • Our pedi told us 6 months, but I think I'm gonna start next weekend, she will be a week shy of 6 months, I think she will be ok :)

  • Our pedi also recommended 6 months. Call me lazy but it's easier to keep with status quo of just BM and BM diapers. We'll probably hold out until 6 months but we'll see. :)

  • We just don't see the point in rushing.  She is EBF and shows no interest in solids.  Her weight and height is healthy and she's getting the nutrients she needs.  Plus, it's easier to BF than make food

Solids are a pain in the ass. They are one more thing I need to schedule in and worry about, so I'm in no rush...
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
