Baby Names

Why is Felicity so un-popular?

It's one of my favorites and possibly the name we will use for this little girl, but I'm trying to figure out why it's nearly 800 on the SSA list. For some reason I thought it was more common/popular than that..

So I am wondering, is it because it makes you think of someone snotty, prissy or ugly?

It seems like it should be one of those up and coming names, old-fashioned, delicate, pretty, etc. I just want to know if I'm missing something...

Thanks :)

ETA: My husband and I are pretty much set on using Felicity, see new pic in signature! :)

Re: Why is Felicity so un-popular?

  • I think it's a pretty name, though maybe a bit prissy.  It has a couple of cultural references that might make or break it for some people, too: Felicity the television show, and Felicity the American Girl doll.

  • I love it!!! dh said no because of the tv show, but I would love to see a little Felicity!
  • FWIW - I think it's super cute.

I often wonder why my two favorite girl names (one being my daughter's name) are so unpopular too.... <Phoebe & Ruby>

  • I think it's adorable!

I just commented on your thread, but those names are both popular in Australia! I was reading your other post and thought "Ruby would go well with that". Too funny that you have a daughter named that! I lived there as a kid and love a lot of the names that are popular down there, including Ruby, Tessa, Phoebe, Jacinda/Jacinta, Annika, Isla, Pippa, etc.

FWIW, I think they are great names :)

I loved the show and the actress, so that one is a good association for me.

Going to look up the American Girl doll - is that the red haired one? We have a daughter named Adelaide who we sometimes call her Addie, which is another American Girl name.  Maybe we need a Samantha and a Molly to complete the set, lol. Big Smile

  • I have no idea why it's not popular, but I think that's part of why it's such a great name to use. It's familiar, obviously feminine, has a standard spelling and to my ears, there's a bit of electricity when I say it. AOGG fans will recognize it as one of the Avonlea characters. Would the lack of popularity stop you from using it?

Personally I find Felicity to be a hidden gem.

Popularity doesn't mean much to us, we have two other daughters whose names are lower than 500 on the name list. I guess I just assumed it was higher, like Charlotte, because it does seem like a name that everyone knows how to spell, say, etc.

I agree that it sounds pretty and "electric" to my ears, mostly fresh sounding. I hope it fits our daughter's personality :)

  • I LOVE Felicity! I first think of the American Girl Doll, which is a great connotation for me, I loved the dolls when I was younger.

  • I personally love it.  I think of the American Girls' books that I loved reading growing up.  I also love Colonial history and it was popular then.

  • I love it, particularly because it's a real name and not too popular.  The first thing I thought of was Felicity the TV show, but even if people do think of the TV show or the American Girl doll when they hear the name, once your daughter has the name it will become her own- people will think of HER and not other things.

  • I love the name Felicity but I know someone that I don't get a long with very well named Felicia. Otherwise I'd use it in a heartbeat!

  • I think it's a really pretty name and have suggested it to SO.  Unfortunately the only times we've both heard it used were on the show Felicity and the show Road to Avonlea (most Americans probably aren't familiar with this one).  He can't get past the characters in those shows so unfortunately it's a no-go.

  • I think it's a great choice. I love your naming style and I think little Felicity will fit right in! I personally think it's a bonus that the name is unpopular.

  • First, your daughters' names are absolutely gorgeous!!! Wow! Second, I think Felicity is a wonderful name and I love its meaning. I'm not sure why it's not more popular, but I suppose that adds a bit to its appeal (at least for me). It's an undiscovered treasure :)
  • I like Felicity! It makes me think of Felicity King from the show Avonlea (or the book The Story Girl). I did have a student named Felicity once, she hated it. She went by Fissy.

  • I'm not sure why Felicity isn't more popular, maybe it has to do with how it is longer (4 syllables) and I can't really think of a nickname?  I think it's a pretty name and it fits right in with your other two.  Good choice!
  • I love Felicity!  I haven't even though or heard of that name in awhile!

I could easily see that name in top 100 in a few years!  If it was a name on Glee or something it would/could easily be a popular name!

  • I like it a lot, and I like your other daughters' names as well.  It's hard to find good girl names that aren't too popular, so I think you have a winner.

That list is funny isn't it? It's surprised me a few times. And I'm glad to help! I see you've already updated your signature too :). I love your naming style and whether Felicity is spunky or shy, I have a feeling it will fit. It's how we feel about our soon-to-be second daughters first name.

  • Love it.  It's a beautiful name and it matches well with your other daughters' names.  FWIW, Felicity the American Girl doll is "Lissie" sometimes I think (my 5th grade brain seems loooong ago) and I think it's a darling nickname.

  • For me, the strikes against it are the F sound (just don't like F or V in general) and the fact that it's a virtue name (NMS). I don't dislike it, I just don't like it, I guess. I'm neutral.

Haha, that's interesting! I'm not sure why we keep going longer. The middle name for this one was hard, but we picked something meaningful and special to us. Her name will mean "happy lady of the sea" which pretty much sealed the deal for me. I love it!

  • I'm not sure either... I really like the name, as well as the similar name Felicia. Felix has climbed in popularity, so why not its feminine counterpart?

  • I'm surprised it's so low in the charts too. I'm guessing it will be climbing though. I know multiple little girls named Felicity. It seems like one of those older classic names that is making a comeback. I've always thought it was pretty :)

  • I love the name Felicity and would love to use it. It was my great-great-grandmother's name, but she spelled it Felicite.

The problem is that it does not go at all with my last name which is 3 syllables and ends in "ey". Something about it is off, otherwise I would use it in a heartbeat.

I'm glad you have such a good perspective on this. I mean, who doesn't love American Girls? They were some of my favorite books as a child, and I can only HOPE that my daughters will love them as well. They help young girls relate to their historical counterparts, and teach them a good lesson while they are at it.

And the TV show association doesn't bother me either. I never watched it, but I'm pretty sure it was a normal show... nothing about vampires or serial killers, as far as I know. And I LOVE Keri Russell!

Flick is the traditional nickname for Felicity, but you could also do Flicka, Flossie, Essie, or Lissie... or Pumpkin, Roly Poly, Smiley, etc.
