VBAC

Updated VBAC statistics

holly321holly321 member

On the ICAN website for baltimore, it lists the number of vbacs for the local hospitals for the 2008 to 2009 years. My hospital had an n/a, meaning less than 20.  This of course had me very concerned.  I just found the numbers for 2009 to 2010, and the hospital had 30 vbacs.  This is not the best number, I know, but it makes me feel more hopeful/reassured for when I do get pregnant.

And in 2008 to 2009, the percentage of c sections was over 39, now it is only 36.

  • Do you have a link?

  • Considering that only 8% of women who have a baby after a prior cesarean have VBACs, I don't think 30 is that bad, right?  Just the number by itself isn't too helpful though.  It would be good to know what percentage of VBAC attempts were successful.  And how many deliveries do they do a year?  How does that number compare to other hospitals in the area?

  • here is the link, it is for all hospitals in maryland

    https://mhcc.maryland.gov/consumerinfo/hospitalguide/hospital_guide/reports/find_a_condition/condition_types_b.asp?condition_cd=Moms

And there were 163 rcs, so the percentage for vbac is 15%.

There were a total of 1166 deliveries.  I know the numbers are great, but they are improving.

But that doesn't tell you how many were VBAC attempts, does it?  Anyway a 15% VBAC rate is a lot higher than the national rate of approx. 8% so that's good.

  • Holly, are you at Carroll? Did you have your first there, too? I think I remember that you said that you had a lot of questions about your c-section.

I grew up in Westminster. But now I'm up in the Waynesboro,PA/ Hagerstown area and going to Meritus.

I've always wondered how Carroll Hospital is for birth, though. My mom had all of us at GBMC, but one of my friends seems to love Carroll Hospital for her births...though she's never needed a c-section, but she does have difficult labors. And one of my other friends was a nurse there, but moved in....2009....I believe.

I saw those stats the other day, too, and I was kind of worried because my hosptial still comes up as N/A...which means 20 or under. And it's funny because it had Frederick Memorial as having VBACS, but according to one of the nurse coordinators at Meritus, they are having more people come to them for VBAC's because Frederick isn't doing them anymore. Maybe she is wrong, though, because I know FMH wasn't doing them 5 or so years ago, but then they changed their policy.

  • I did use carroll.  In general, I was very unhappy with my experience.  But I love my obgyn, and the way I see it, I would rather be happy with a pregnancy than the hospital experience, since the pregnancy lasts a lot longer.  And I am neurotic/oct, and he helped keep me calm. I have never had a dr. call me, and talk to me for well over 10 minutes, on a friday evening, when I had never been there, because I was upset with something from my original ob's practice.  So, I will be using Carroll again.

I also highly recommend not using Carroll  Obgyn.  I thave heard that they are very quick to do c sections.  They never called me after getting my blood work, and my progestrone was low (that's why I switched to Dr. Barnett)  My friend was sent by them for blood work to see if she was pregnant, was told she didn't ovulate, and was sent for blood work two more times, and was pretty much told that is she was able to conceive, it would be very difficult.  She was pregnant the whole time.

    But about the hospital...

I really didn't like 2 of my 7 total nurses.  Which usually wouldn't be too big of an issue, but they kept giving me the one, so I left the hospital early.  But the other nurses were great.

I really hate my anesthiologist, but that is because she let me get cut open while I wasn't numb, which I repeatedly told her I wasn't.

I also think Carroll has rules about csections and other stuff.  When my dr. was telling me I had to have a c section, I could since he didn't agree.  (I now wonder if I could have refused.) And at 38 weeks, the dr. sent me to the hospital for cramping, I was then 3 cm, but still not in labor. I get the feeling he was all for inducing me by breaking my water (which I was too) but wouldn't due to hospital rules, he said he couldn't until I was 39 weeks.

And about frederick, my sister in law (who is due very soon, and  delivering at frederick) is a nanny for one of their obgyns.  So she has been discussing my situation with her, and she said that the dr. she works for said I would be a great vbac candidate at her practice, only thing is that I would have to wait 18 months (can't remember if that was to great pregnant, or have the baby) Not that I was considering switching, just was curious about her opinion.  So by that, I assume they do still do vbacs, just maybe they are very strict?

  • Oh, okay...yeah, that is what I thought about Frederick, too, so I was surprised she said that.

And about nurses...I know what you mean! I left the hospital early, too, because of my nurse! She drove ...me...crazy! I could go on about it, but I don't think she intended harm. But I did have a couple of seemingly inept nurses.

Whenever I hear people say, 'of course, I care about people....I'm a nurse', I unfortunately wonder the opposite! I know that is terrible, but maybe some of them become jaded or bossy or...I don't know! There are definitely some great ones, too, but in my experience the doctors and most of the midwives have been nicer, much more gentle, and brighter.

I think so.  I know Illinois's numbers are available on the IDPH (IL dept of Health) website.  I don't have a link but a google search might turn it up.

  • About my nurses: I think the one had just had her first child. This is the one  I really didn't like.  I think she had ppd, and was way too full of suggestions.  She was awful with help for bf, and admitted she gave up after a month.

And I do think all states provide that sort of info.  The website I got it from is with the health dept, we use it at work to get eligibility info for medical assistance patients.  I found on a different website to look there for the info, and had similar links for other sites.  DD is getting fussy, so I will look for you later this evening.

  • Here is a website, not the right one, but it did have the md link
