Trying to Get Pregnant

Middleschmertz???

Hey ladies

My husband and I just started ttc and I having some concerns. For as long as I can remember I've always had cramps two weeks before my period starts. So honestly for half of the month it seems like I have cramps. I'm not sure what this means. If I'm correct, this happens after I've ovulated. I'm going to start charting this month. I've done some research and I believe this is called middleschmertz. Is this common and does it effect conception? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Middleschmertz???

  • I've never heard of this before but just wanted to say good luck.

  • Mittelschmertz (it's German for middle-pain) is just feeling ovulation. Some women feel it and some don't. It's usually one-sided pain (and it changes sides depending on which side ovulates.) One of my closest friends says she's always felt it- personally I don't think I ever have. When I do feel what I'd think is ovulating pain it can almost always be something else so I never know for sure.

edit: Whoops I read this as two weeks before your period not FOR two weeks. I'd talk to your dr for sure. Good luck!

  • Mittelschmertz is common, and its pain with ovulation.  It should last a few hours to a few days.  It should not cause cramps for two whole weeks.  Have you talked to a doctor about this?

  • I honestly just thought it was menstrual cramps and didn't think much of it until we decided to start trying. It's a  pain in my abdomen. I'm going to make an appointment next week.

    Thanks for the info
  • Is it more on one side or the other? It could be a cyst of some sort. That's good that you're going to get it checked out.

Ditto. I have it most months when I ovulate. It lasts about 6 hours for me. It shouldn't last two weeks. Glad you're calling your doc.

It's not so bad. Feels like pinpointed cramping on one side. I actually have more intense O pain than I do period cramps.

  • I had this happen once - while I was on BCP.  It was fine - what I remember them saying is that it was a trapped follicle or something - not sure if that makes sense now.

If they are lasting two weeks, I agree that you should see your doctor about it. I get them every month around O time for about 3 days. Two weeks seems awfully long.

  • Yeah, the more I think about it the more I want to get checked out. Just talked to my mom and she said she used to have the same problem. It's like I have O pain and then the next week I have regular pms cramps. Calling the doc Monday for sure.
