Gift Ideas for a 1-Year-Old's Birthday Party?

I know I don't belong here but I thought this might be a good place to ask about gift ideas for a one-year-old.  He is a member of our extended family and we probably can't afford to spend more than $30.  I've already decided I will give him mom a gift receipt for whatever we purchase, but I'd like to have a couple of ideas instead of just going to a toy store and picking out something cute for his age.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

I still haven't decided what we're getting DD for a gift, but if you want more bang for your buck (or something for this little boy and something for your LO!) Toys R Us is having a buy one get one free on some select fisher price  toys. I think today is the last day but they have some really neat toys for 1 year+.

All three of my kids have LOVED the fisher-price piggy bank. It is pink, but the coins are multicolored, and it has been a hit at our house. Still, all three will play with it, My baby works on hand eye coordination, and my oldest sorts colors! Fun for all!!

I like to do theme presents.  For one-year-olds I typically do a bathtime or bedtime theme with kid bubble bath, some tub crayons, tub toys, and a hooded towel.  For bedtime I do a book, pajamas, a lullaby/classic music CD, bath wash and lotion, and maybe a lovey or blanket.

$25 bucks will get you a $50 savings bond.  Put it in a cheap book and call it a present to the parents you didn't get them something that will clutter their house and the kid won't care about   This is my go to 1st birthday present and I ALWAYS appreciate it as a gift for my kids! They hhave sooo much stuff, when they are 16 they will be so happy to have that help them buy a car.  On each certificate we get I write who gave it to them so they can appreciate it even more when they are older.

We just had DSs birthday party today and got a few great gifts. A lovely wooden shape sorter, a big bucket of wooden blocks, a "jigsaw" with big fat pegs to grip and a gorgeous frog from Pintoy that you drag backwards on the ground and when you let go he 'hops' along (kind of like the cars you can buy but way cooler).

In saying all that, DS doesn't have very many toys so we appreciated all of what we got and so does DS, he had a blast playing with everything.

This is great!! It's a great toy that he won't grow out of for quite awhile. They have a wagon also. I've seen them at Walmart too.

My BFF's DD just turned 1 and I bought her a box of diapers, a box of wipes, & a small bath toy. My BFF said it was the best present all day  So thinking of something practical might be useful too!!
