Enfamil vs. Similac vs. Gerber MOMS SING OUT

Which brand is the best. DS is having problems with spit up. Not really spit up...more like throw up. It's not runny, it's usually like curdled milk. I've tried him on soy, but he'll only take like half an ounce before crying. So i've been giving him similac sensitive. But I was reading the canisters at the store today and the gerber canister said it had enzymes to help gentle digestion. but I know a lot of moms who've said enfamil gentlease is the best. idk. moms sing out. I need help!

  • I would ask your pedi for recommendations. I think I heard that you're not suppose to change formulas without talking to the pedi. I could be wrong though. We use Similac Advance and breast milk. DS was spitting up alot and very fussy and come to find out he had reflux. It doesn't hurt to ask the experts, i.e. the pedi!

  • I agree with pp that you should ask your pedi. I know my pediatrician said that Gerber Good Start is okay if that is what we want to use (when I asked if it was okay) but when I asked her what she would use for her baby she said she would use Similac. So we use Similac, I like it because it is suppose to be the closest to breast milk.
  • DS started on Similac Advance, then we went to Gerber Goodstart, and now we're on Similac Sensitive and it's a world of difference. He's spitting up less, not as gassy or burpy, and he will drink a bottle without screaming.

it's all trial and error, every baby is different.

We were using Similac Sensitive and it was good but I wasn't crazy about the ingredients. So we switched to Good Start Gentle. My DD still spits up some but is not fussy about it. The Good Start uses Whey Proteins vs. the Casein (sp?) Proteins and that is preferable for me.  I know most of these formulas have corn syrup in them but I didn't like that the first two ingredients in Similac Sensitive were that and then sugar. Plus it's lactose free and I know that's an easy fix but I don't think most babies are lactose intolerant.  It's totally a personal choice and I would also talk to your pedi about it after doing some research so you go in a bit more informed and have the right questions to ask.
  • We started out on Similac Advanced and are now on Similac Sensitive.  It has made a world of difference.  Since switching, DS hardly ever spits up and his gas is much better.  We chose to use similac sensitive b/c it is lactose free and DH is lactose intolerant and thought DS might be too.  We also spoke with the pedi about it who thought the sensitive would be a good fit for us.  But every baby is different.  I would ask your pedi what they would recommend and try that out.  If it doesn't help, you can always switch until you find the formula that is best for you.

DD has reflux and does not like Similac.  We have her on Enfamil AR and it has been much better.  She also takes Prevacid for the acid reflux.  The Enfamil Gentlease did not work for spit-up for us.  I also have her on probiotics.
