Update on DS (Alimentum and possible allergies)

Well, DS has been on Alimentum since the morning of July 4th. His constipation continued through the 5th but we gave him a suppository and cleaned him out and we could tell what was the "Goodstart poop" and what was the "Alimentum poop." His reflux decreased, he started sleeping through the night (3 nights in a row now!) and (although we thought he was getting constipated again because he didn't have a BM at all on Wednesday) he's pooping like normal! I changed a poopy diaper yesterday that looked "normal" for the first time in months! I never thought I would be so excited about the contents of a diaper...

So we met with the ped again this morning to discuss all this and what it could mean. Of course, there's still unknowns. The Alimentum working doesn't mean he NEEDS Alimentum. It just confirms that Gerber formula doesn't work for him. So once we finish our can of Alimentum, we're going to try Similac Sensitive (lactose-free) with DS because DH and DD both have lactose sensitivity. If the increase in reflux and constipation returns, we'll go back to Alimentum. But if not, we'll stick with the Similac Sensitive.

We had to increase his Zantac dose a bit (because, are you ready for this? He gained THREE POUNDS in one month!) but decided not to change his med right now because if we change his med and his formula and something goes wonky, we won't know which caused it.

We follow-up in two weeks, and if we have to go back on Alimentum, we'll be doing allergy testing and also going to a ped GI. Wish us luck!!

  • Does increasing his dosage make him eat less? I ask because we increased my DD's Pepcid last week, and she has been eating much less since then.  Thanks in advance.
