You just want to avoid wine that is too oaky/earthy. I have had great luck with Tempranillos and Merlots for Sangria (ironically, when I am drinking red, I prefer the more oak-y flavors).
I use 2 Buck Chuck aka Trader Joes Charles Shaw. There's no point in putting in expensive wines seeing as your mixing it w/ juices, etc. The best Sangria I ever had was made w/ TJ $2 wine and I was shocked!! Of course, that's the only part of the recipe my friend will give me!!!
