Diaper service?

Hello everyone,

I just came across this board and it seems like a great resource!

Just a brief introduction - I am due with my first baby in early September and am beginning more thorough research on many different topics in preparation for the baby's arrival.

At this time, we are planning on using non-disposable diapers. I've heard great things about Bum Genius, but didn't know really what would be more economical or better for the environment (obviously the re-usables at home require washing- soap/ water expense plus the time), so was wondering if anyone has experience or advice for diaper services in the area. I've done some searching, but not sure how one service compares to another, or what the cost comparison would be (not knowing really how often or frequently we'd need to be washing at home if we go that way).

Anyways, that got a bit wordy, but I'd greatly appreciate any insight any of you may have.

 Thanks in advance!

Re: Diaper service?

  • Hello and welcome to the board! Congrats on your pregnancy.

I don't have any diaper service recs, but we definitely have some CD experts on his board. There is also a Cloth Diaper board  on The Bump that has fantastic resources. The girls here referred me to that board and I was able to do a ton of research from their resources. Good luck! And stick around here; it's a fun supportive group.

  • I agree with Dawnies' suggestion of the CD board. The only experience I have with a diaper service is Baby Diaper Service in Seattle (though I live in Everett/Mukilteo and got service just fine). It was OK but they only offer prefolds, which I really didn't like at all. So, I stopped the service, bought some fitteds and pockets and now wash at home. It's really not that much work to do the washing and well worth it.

Punkernoodle and Cozy Baby Boutique are local stores that carry cloth diapers so you can see them in person and ask questions.

  • I also agree, lurk on the CD board, you will get lots of info from them.  If cost is part of your equation, definately buy your own...services can be just as expensive as disposables.  I only do wash 2-3x a week:  Water is cheap, and I only dry the inserts, but hang dry the covers.  I wash at night time, hang, and they are ready in the morning.  It takes about 5 minutes to stuff them.  You do have to use special detergent, but one of the "cloth safe" ones is Planet, which i can get on sale at Fred Meyers for $4.79, so it doesn't have to be expensive.

I do love my BGs, and they go on sale every once in a while on cottonbabies.com buy 5, get 1 free, or you can buy used for even cheaper.

Sorry, not trying to change your mind, but just offering up my .02 :)  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!  And congrats and welcome, BTW!

  • Welcome to the CD club!  I was initially interested in the diaper service, but the cost was a real turnoff- there is really no monetary savings as compared to using paper diapers.  Also, as PP said, you are limited to just prefolds- of course, lots of moms are happy with them, but I have a very heavy wetter (and now a total squirmer) so I really didn't care for prefolds and only used Indian Cotton ones I purchased myself for the newborn stage.  I found it very helpful to take classes- I took the first one with DH through Birth and Beyond, and then a second (private) one with Bumpies at Punkernoodle Baby, although by that time I had a good stash going.  We do use some BGs- mostly 3.4/4.0 and a couple AIOs, but mostly for out and about.  Many people find pockets to either be a) annoying to stuff or b) not good for overnight on older babies since they are very difficult to stuff enough absorbency in without gapping for overnights.  I bought a wide variety of styles and have since expanded my stash based on what I like- turns out I am a fitteds and wool kind of gal, which I never expected.  But I love them for letting DD's bum breathe- they are the coolest and most absorbent option.  I also like AI2s for the ease of use, cute outers and quicker dry time than AIOs.  You might look into doing a trial through Jillian's Diapers to see what you like best.  I was mostly lucky and liked most everything I bought prebaby, with the exception of FuzziBunz OS- HATED them.  But the great thing about diapers is the resale marked for gently used ones is terrific, so don't be afraid to try a few things out if you spot a good deal.  And definitely check the FAQ on the CD board- those girls have got everything covered and I find it to be the nicest of the national boards too.  Good luck!

  • Thank you, ladies! Great information, I appreciate it!

Really glad I found this board.

  • I used the baby diaper service for my entire maternity leave and LOVED it. Prefolds are easy when they are that little and you are doing a lot of diaper changes.  but I was interested in cloth for the environmental impact, not to save $$$.  I bought a ton of cloth and then never used it 'cause I couldn't manage the washing on top of working full time.   I recommend the diaper service to everyone for the early weeks when you'll appreicate having someone drop off the clean diapers and pick up the dirty ones!  They provide you with a great pail to use so there is no stink.

This! I liked the service when I was at home, but went to disposable once I went back to work. Easier for me and for daycare. The customer service at baby diaper service was amazing!

  • Can I ask which service you used? It's hard to distinguish between them just looking online - it's great to know (sort of) first-hand specific services that worked well.

    Thanks!

I think they are the only one (from what I recall of my research) that goes outside the city limits, too.

  • We loved our prefolds and covers for the newborn stage, but they weren't as easy to use as pockets (like BG's) or fitteds.  The AIO's and pockets are much preferred by our care providers, who have actually started talking other people into doing cloth because it's so easy - pretty much the same as putting on 'sposies.  It was actually cheaper for us in the long run to buy the CD's ourselves than to do the diaper service, even with the NB prefolds/covers.
