How to get around late birthday for school?

My daughter's birthday is September 9, 8 days after the public school cutoff. I've been told that some private schools have their own cutoff dates and will admit her if she passes their readiness test. Has anyone hear of this or know of any schools that do so? Most of the private schools I've seen have a cutoff of September 1 too. Am I still supposed to ask? Just curious. Had I known, I would've been induced a week! :) Happy Friday gals!

  • I would love to know this but am not holding my breath. My girls' birthdays are September 10th and September 26th. LOL.

    Happy Friday back at you.

  • My second daughter got lucky by 3 days. She was born August 29. So if DD1 starts late, they'll only be one grade apart. But DD1 is so tall she looks like a four-year-old! :)
  • Lately, most schools are very strick with this guidelines.  If you want a specific school, you may have to ask (beg) for an exception.  GL

  • Nope, they're very strict on the deadline.  I've called both Private shcools and spoke with people downtown and they will not budge with the deadline.  Even a day off.  Catholic schools are very strict on this, too... I've called Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Timothy's and St. John Neumann and their cutoff is September 1st, no exceptions.  Dade-County Public Schools are the same way.

Maybe begging a private school, but definitely not a public school.  It's not up to them, it's up to the state.

  • There's no way around it. But, when I taught kindergarten, I did notice that the kids who turned 6 early in the year were definitely more mature than some of the other students which helped their readiness to learn.  Of course, the other kids were fine and I had one who turned 5 the day school started.  He was very immature and didn't get the rules.  But, by the end of the year, he had caught up with the other kids.

What i suggest (which is what I want to do for my DD) is to find an advanced program that will go beyond the regular kindergarten curriculum since she will probably have 3 years of preschool by the time she starts kindergarten.

  • DD is 10/4 and unfortunately nothing we could do even though she was ahead of children her age.  DS is 11/1 so he is a couple months behind....I was literally thinking today that when trying for baby #3 we will try to plan a pre 9/1 due date. lol

  • Does it really matter?  Studies often show that the older children are when they start school, the better they do with regards to learning and school performance.  In that light, your kids have a huge advantage over the others that will be in their classes.

  • Mason was born in march so this really isn't an issue for us. But even if his birthday was in August, I would most likely hold him back a year. I'm a first grade teacher and many times the younger students struggle more because they just aren't ready. What's the rush?
