Swaddle Help

So LO seems to hate being swaddled. We use the swaddle me blankets, and as soon as we wrap her up in it she starts trying to escape, she turns bright red and grunts and groans. The problem is that she needs to be swaddled in order to sleep, if I put her down unswaddled she is up 20 min later. What do you think we should do? Do we continue to swaddle - perhaps give the woombie another shot (she had a melt down the last time we put her in it) or should we start calling it quits with the swaddling and just go with a sleep sack?

Re: Swaddle Help

  • Have you tried swaddling arms out? DD has always prefered that. We use the a+a blankets, and they work wonderfully.

  • My LO seemed to hate the swaddle as well.  I found that if he is really drowsy and ready for bed he does better.  When he's fighting it, I rock him in the swaddle and sometimes give him a paci.  DH had luck just putting him on his chest while swaddled and he calmed right down.  Good luck!!  Try to stick with it though, because I really believe it helps them sleep.

  • LO is 3 weeks old today and loved/needed to be swaddled for the first week and a half.  Now, the second we swaddle him, he struggles to get his arms out.  I think I want to try the sleep sack so his arms are free, but I'm torn because it's his flailing arms that wake him when he startles.  We also had the swaddle me with the velcro and he sleept so soundly the first two days with that, but seriously hates his arms tucked in now.  IDK what a woombie is, I'll have to look it up.  What if you set up the blanket in the crib (or where ever you put her down) ready to be swaddled but don't actually swaddle her right away.  Maybe wait a minute after you put her down and she's out so she doesn't realize but before the 20 minutes when she'd wake up?

  • our ds does the same thing with the squirming and trying to free and grunting and red face.  We've tried swaddle with arms out and in and he does the same thing either way.  With arms out he startles himself with his arms too though.  We have a size small sleep sack but it's still huge on him.

  • Ours squirms, grunts and gets a red face too, but only for a second and he calms down almost right away.  The swaddle works so it is worth a second of him resisting.

  • It might be worth trying another swaddler.  We used the Halo swaddles, and they worked really well.  I have heard that the woombies allow them to move their arms, maybe she needs a bit more confinement.  It'd be worth it to give the sleepsack a try too.  My son loves sleeping in his sleepsack - it's provides some confinement and snugness yet his arms are still out.
