2nd Trimester

Running in the heat

Just wondering what you ladies thought on this.  what outside temp is too hot to run outside while pregnant in your opinion? I just went running and it is 80, it felt HOT!!

Re: Running in the heat

  • It just depends on how hydrated you are, how you feel, how humid it is and how fast your temp rises.  You should be comfortable and able to carry on a conversation.

I prefer running early morning when the sun isn't out.  80 + SUN = SICK.

  • I couldn't say, I haven't been running this pregnancy, but I do walk a lot- and I try to avoid going when the temps get too high (which unfortunately means I need to get my butt moving EARLY as it gets past 80 here at 9am usually, and up near 100 lately).  Don't push yourself too hard, and make sure you are drinking LOTS of water when/after you are out in the heat!

  • Be really careful.  Its way easier for a pregnant woman to faint due the our increased blood supply, our blood pressure can rise so quickly without much notice.  I would either switch to running in the gym on a treadmill or go run early in the morning when the temps are cooler.  And definitely make sure you have plenty water and a little something on your stomach.
  • What was the humidity? That also plays into the heat. Instead of just the temperature look at the heat index to give you an idea of how hot it feels. I live in Phoenix and the temperature is 99 but with the humidity of 33% the index is 105.

I don't run, but every morning I walk 2 miles. I am thinking of moving it to the mall so I stay cooler. To me if you are having problems staying hydrated or even feeling lightheaded after a workout you might consider changing.

  • I live in SC so we've had 90 degree plus temps since May. I've still managed to run 4 times per week BUT I only run at 6am. I take lots of walk breaks, carry water, keep my pace way slower than my pre-pregnancy pace, and limit the length of my runs to 45 minutes/ 5 miles.

My doctor says if I want to run during the heat of the day, I should carry a thermometer with me and take my temperature every mile. If it goes over 100 degrees, then it's too hot. That seems really inconvenient to me so I'll stick with 6am runs!

TTC since 3/09 with PCO and endometriosis; 4 failed-to-ovulate Clomid cycles; Anastrozole cycle 1= BFP! Betas 13dpo= 99, 15 dpo= 216, 24 dpo= 6892. Saw our precious baby and heard heartbeat 4/26! BabyFruit Ticker

This is the theory I've taken for running during my pregnancy, too.

  • I live in Tucson where it is very hot! I run early morning 5:30 am and wear a hydration pack. As long as the sun is low I usually feel pretty good.
