Sippy Cups?

When do you start introducing sippy cups?  She is showing interest in our cups and I have read you can start doing it when they start getting interested.  Has anyone started doing this yet?

Re: Sippy Cups?

  • I read some where that you should start early so they can get used to it. I also saw transition sippy cups that have a nipple that you can eventually take away. I don't remember when you are suppose to start.

We won't be starting a sippy cup until 6 months or later.

  • Once she starts getting a real good grip on her toys, I'll give her a sippy cup with a little water for her to play with. I see this happening in a few weeks, but I don't have a definite time. She does grip her toys, but for the most part it is still a soft grip, she is getting better though.
  • I started Logan on a sippy cup and he loves it! I bought the Nuk brand one because it has a soft spout like a nipple. He grabs the 2 handles and sucks on it, but hasn't figured out how to tip it yet. I put a little bit of water in it for practice and let him play with it. He gets a little better everyday. I usually give it to him at meal time, so he can try to grasp the concept.

I think as soon as your LO is doing well with grabbing toys it would be ok to introduce a sippy cup. It might make the bottle/sippy cup transition easier.

  • I think we started with DD around 6 months.  It is mostly a plaything at first, but eventually they do get the hang of it.

  • We just bought the Tippee Tommee transition cup today. We will probably start over the weekend. Pedi says he can have 1-2 ounces of water a day.
  • I started my lo on a regular cup a few weeks ago. He Loves it! I give it to him mostly in the bath because it gets a little messy of course. The WTE book advises starting a regular cup before the sippy so that its easier to transition later and not such a foreign concept. I thought I would try it out. It is really fun.
