3rd Trimester

Left side of my face has been numb/tingly for at least 4 hours

Woke up this morning and my face (the left side) feels like its 'asleep' or almost like leftover numbness from dental work, but my muscles are all fine, I have no swelling, no bug bites, and I feel otherwise fine. I called my doctors office and am waiting for a call back. Its been about 45 minutes. Anyone else experience this? It doesn't seem to be going away and I'm getting a bit nervous.

TIA!

  • I get numbness with migranes, but I know it is possible for baby to push/hit nerves which can result in stroke-like symptoms but usually that is more common when a woman is carrying multiples.

  • It's definitely not baby -- baby is not pressing against any cranial nerves.

It could be a few things; All of which you should see a doctor about ASAP. It could be a prelude to a stroke, a TIA (mini stroke sort of), an allergic reaction, or something called bell's palsy which causes often times temporary paralysis of one side of the face.

  • This sounds like what I had when I had a really really bad sinus infection.  It happened more than once & took the drs a while to figure out.  The sinus infection was putting pressure on a nerve that numbed my half of my face (from mid-cheek to ear) and actually made me go deaf in one ear until the infection was under control.  Ironically I didn't realize that I even had an ear infection to go along with the sinus infection since it was pressing on that nerve numbing everything.  So it could be that for you too.  (I have to have this treated with antibiotics since nothing else really clears it up for me.)

However, that said...it can *easily* be something else.  When you present with different/unusual symptoms, it is always best to call the doctor!  It could be several worrisome things, and its better safe than sorry...especially if it's not going away.  GL

  • I'm not trying to be an alarmist but another Bumpie I know had something similar happen and it ended up being a rare genetic disorder that can cause strokes. Obviously the odds of that happening are pretty rare but you did the right thing to call your doctor. I have heard that Bell's palsy can happen in pregnancy as well.

Bell's Palsy During Pregnancy: A Summary

Bell's palsy is a form of temporary facial paralysis resulting from damage or trauma to a facial nerve. Because of this damage, people with Bell's palsy experience symptoms that can include:
    • Twitching, weakness, or paralysis of on one or both sides of the face
    • Drooping eyelid or corner of the mouth
    • Drooling
    • Dry eye or mouth
    • Impairment of taste
    • Excessive tearing in the eye.
For reasons not completely understood, women who are pregnant develop Bell's palsy more frequently than the general population. The risk of Bell's palsy during pregnancy is thought to be greatest during the third trimester, or within several weeks of delivery.
The prognosis for women with Bell's palsy during pregnancy is generally good. Bell's palsy does not appear to have any effect on the growing fetus.

  • I had the same thing happen to the right side of my face.  I woke up from a nap and I could not move the right side, my eye would not close and my mouth was droopy.

I visited the doctor and a specialist who diagnosed me with Bell's Palsy.  I didn't know I was pregnant at the time, but the specialist insisted I take a test.  That was how I found out I was pregnant!  Pregnant women are 4 times more likely to get it.  It went away after a month or so and everything is fine now.
