I think you'd only put the father's birthstone on if you also put mom's on. In which case its really a family ring, not a mother's ring. But that's a matter of semantics.
I would say hell no if mom's birthstone isn't also on.

Exactly this. I have what I consider to be a "family ring". TJ bought it for me for Christmas, both he and Madeline were born in September and I was born in June. There are September birthstones on the outsides and the June birthstone in the center.

I don't have one, but I occasionally rock my grandma's 70s family ring with my mom and dad's, my aunt and uncle's, and mine. So I say, whatever you want, dear. As should your DH.
DH was looking at a mother's braclet, and the jewler told him it was fairly common to put the father's birthstone on it too. I had never heard of that before. I've always seen either just the child's, or the mother's and her children's. He has decided to something else any way. Good thing, because I don't really see myself wearing a braclet that much. I had mentioned I wanted a stackable ring, so I don't know where the braclet idea came in.

I say if you are your Dh's mother, then include it. But since you're not, don't.
Or like the others said, if you do a "family" thing, then include yours too.
