Teaching Baby to go DOWN stairs?

He's learned to crawl up stairs. I found him 4 stairs up when I left him downstairs for a second to go up to get something. We're moving soon and will be single-story but my mom (who is also my daycare) has stairs and I can't babyproof forever. =)

When did you start teaching the baby how to get down the stairs? Should I start trying soon?

Re: Teaching Baby to go DOWN stairs?

  • If he can go up, he can come down.  Teach him to come down backwards.

  • I would teach him to do down on his butt. My niece and nephew did that for years.
  • Maddie normally goes down on her butt or backwards. ?With that said, she's 2 and I still don't let her go down without out help. ?I am terrified of her falling so she always holds our hand going down. ?She's lightning fast at going up though.
  • Sorry... out = our
  • I've been tryin to teach her to go down the stairs backwards for months now.  All she wants to do is climb them back up.
  • slide down feet first on their belly. ?I would just kinda Emma do it, and she had it down by 10months... Aidan is another story, although I haven't worked on it with him.
  • Wow, I just had to say I am impressed that he can go up 4 stairs already at 8 months!
  • I would teach him to slide down on his belly (DD is figuring this out right now), but I would still gate the stairs at your mom's. ?DD can go down a few stairs on her belly and gets off the couch, etc. correctly most of the time, but not 100% and if I'm not watching her, could still be in for a nasty fall. ?She also doesn't understand that she can't just turn and sit on the stairs since she can easily miss the step and end up tumbling. ?
