Anyone use a Moby?

I'm getting such mixed reviews on them.  One friend told me it was such a lifesaver when she had her second, but I keep reading how they are too hot.  Anyone here have input?  It's going to be very hot here in August and probably most of Sept.  I love the idea of wearing the baby, and I have an ergo, but wanted something to use when she's smaller, too.

Re: Anyone use a Moby?

  • I used mine a lot when Paul was small. A lot of times I would just wear a nursing tank under it.

I have one and never felt that I could tie it well enough to feel confident wearing Claire.  I put it in the drawer and saved it for this baby but so far haven't used it.  You might want to check out youtube videos of how to tie it to get a better idea if it would work for you.

  • I really like mine. The only place that fits all 3 of my kids in a cart is wegmans; so if we go anywhere else (like target) I put N in the cart basket, J in the front "seat" and wear B in the moby.

  • I hated mine.

I tried to love it like most everyone else...I tried the different holds but like pp said I never felt that she was safe enough or comfortable enough in there...I always had to hold her with one hand anyway so what's the point?

I have the beco gemini and LOVE that!!! I think it's similar to the ergo, though.

  • I have one that I used up until about 4 months old, which I loved. I would wear her to go walking around a store and she generally would just nod off and it was glorious. We often did stuff in the kitchen that way too - it is how I made all my Christmas cookies last year! That said, I had a baby in late October once it was already cool here. I actually switched to a ring sling now that she is older, but I find with this, I usually have one hand on her. I do like it though, it is much simpler and easier if you are already out someplace (i like it for church, since that usually seems to run into nap time) - when I used the Moby, I always tied it before I left the house and then just put her in when we got where we were going.

  • If you wanted, I would send you ours to try out when the baby is little and when you are done you could send it back. The only warning is that we have cats - not sure if that would be an issue for you.

this was me too.. and the tying it is such a PITA to me.. I am such a fan of my hotsling for the newborn phase.. (they don't actually make hotslings anymore, but there are other brands or I found mine on Ebay). Its super duper simple to put on, no tying or clipping anything.. and Natalie loves to snuggle in it.. I always felt like Eve was going to go flopping out of the Moby when she was a NB, and then once she got bigger, i felt like it stretched with her weight too much and she was hanging down to my knees practically..

That is really sweet!  I actually am allergic to cats so it wouldn't work out but thanks for offering.

Is a hotsling basically the same as a seven sling? https://www.sevenslings.com/index.php/cart

I have two of those (both were gifts) so maybe I should just try that and then move on to my ergo and forget about trying a moby.  Hmm....

  • I loved mine, but I realize they're not for everyone.  I always tied it a bit tighter than I thought it needed to be, and then it stretched a bit and fit perfectly once DS was in it.  He pretty much lived in the moby from 3-8 mos (got a bit too heavy for it around 8 mos so we switched to the ergo at that point).  I loved that I could nurse "hands-free" with it on, and take him in and out of it without having to undo the whole thing.

I agree that august might be too warm for one.  I wore mine mostly in winter and generally just wore it over a nursing tank with a light sweater over it.

  • I loved mine, but I didn't go outside much when DD was born (which was in June 2009) because I was too overwhelmed : )  I agree though that it is very hot. Looking back, I 100% wish I had a ring sling. I have one now and use it with DD, but a ring sling would have been a TOTAL lifesafer. If I had my choice, I would do a rings ling instead. Try www.sleepingbabyproductions.com She is a well priced, quick manufacturing mama with many, many options for ring slings. I just bought 2 slings (both as baby shower gifts); one was a french twill for $32 and the other a linen/cotton mix for $38. Both of those would be much cooler for you to use, plus the added benefit that they aren't as combersome to get on. They act as a great carrier for nursing in too, and you can use the "tail" as a nursing cover.

PM if you have more questions, and if its in your budget to get both I would highly recommend it, but if you only want one for the newborn phase I would go with a ringsling.

Jumping in again... a hotslings or seven sling wouldn't be a great option for a newborn in my opinion. I wouldn't feel comfortable using a sling that can't be adjusted until baby has good enough head control to be worn in a hip carry. A ring sling is SO much easier to use, more versitile, and safer in my opinion than an un-adjustable sling. Because it doesn't tighten around your baby, you won't be able to actually be hands free at all.

Here's a great blog (by a bumpie) talking about different slings, and you can search the website for other carrier types as well.
