Bug bites.

Jackson is really sensitive to bug bites. He gets red, swollen, super itchy spots that last like a week. Any suggestions as to something I can do for them? I use benadryl cream and bug spray before hand and he still suffers with them.

Re: Bug bites.

  • Evie has the same problem.  Last year I had to put rubbing alcohol on them and cover them with giant bandages.  She looked like a burn victim.

This year Calamine lotion & bandaids seems to be working.

  • I am super attractive to mosquitos and both of my kids have inherited this sweet gene :-(  This is the BEST stuff I've ever ever found and it is getting harder and harder to find in stores so you may have to order it.  It's the Band-Aid Anti Itch Gel- formerly known as Rhuli gel.  Seriously good stuff.  One application usually clears it up.  I am about to order some more b/c we all gotten eaten alive at the lake this weekend and I'm almost out.

  • Dh NEVER gets a bite.  But bugs love me and unfortunately DD also.  We have our yard treated every month and that helps.  Also use bug spray.  I try to rub them with alcohol as quickly as possible and sometimes cover DD's with bandaids to keep her from scratching herself too badly.  I have been making her really light seersucker pants to wear instead of shorts.  I want her to be cool in the Summer but with shorts on that's just more skin to be exposed to the biters.

Thanks for the info on the itch gel - I'm gonna have to get some of that!

I agree!  I don't know if they have completely sold out to Band Aid or what but a few years ago I was looking for some and the pharmacist has some behind the counter.

  • We have the same problem with DS.  I got some of the Band Aid itch gel last year when slw recommended it... I think it helps but it wasn't the miracle worker I had hoped for.  We just try to spray him down and I will put long pants on him if I know we're going to be out in the yard at night, since they are bad at our house.  Oh, and we use benadryl cream, too.

  • we basically don't go outside in the summer. my kids are eaten alive from being out just a little bit the other day. i use cortizone to help with the swelling and redness and itch for the ones that are really bad.  i use all nautral cirtonella spray on them when we are outside. and i use oregano oil mix with water on myself- not the best smelling stuff but it works!!

I believe it is now marketed under the Benadryl brand. It has the exact same ingredients and is easy to find at many drug stores. HTH!
