Preemies

Stressing

So baby boy has been doing great and was set up to come home tomorrow or Thursday. Needless to say, of course he has had 3 nurses in 3 days (not including night shift) and they're all newbies. On top of that, I had to be away today so I can't even be there for feeds to keep an eye on him. So I call in and ANOTHER nurse (not his) did his last feed and he had some desats and bradys while bottle feeding. He has NEVER done this before. EVER. I'm stressing. On top of that he's behind schedule for his 2pm feed. I'm so frustrated! Why can't an experienced nurse have him?!? Ugh..... thanks for listening!

Re: Stressing

  • When C was close to coming home I specifically requested nurses that I knew would work with her on feeding so she could come home.  I don't know if your NICU would accommodate this but it's worth a shot.  Good luck.  I hope they are all home soon!

  • Thanks :) we're looking at Thursday - confirmed by the NICU docs. I know the nurse overnight tonight, and hopefully tomorrows will be good (if not I'll be there for all feeds!). I swear the last 24 hours for him will be the most stressful yet! Just praying he doesn't have a preemie moment!

I felt this same way toward the end of our 98 day stay. The last several weeks, we kept getting new nurses, and by that point we knew almost all the nurses, so I didn't understand why no one that we knew was watching our LO and where all these new people were coming from. I felt kinda rejected by all of our "old favorites". Later I learned that because our LO was now one of the healthiest babies (rather than one of the sickest) they had the floating nurses watching him. The floating nurses don't know preemies as well since they work in any area which needs extra nurses then. It took the rejection feelings out for me but still I was missing allt he nurses we knew as we approached our homecoming. Good luck.
