So, although I honestly don't think DS's reflux and constipation are allergy-related, we decided to go ahead and try Alimentum with him so that when we follow-up with the ped on Friday I can tell her that we tried it.
He's been on it for 24 hours now. He didn't poop at all yesterday and was insanely uncomfortable this morning so we gave him a suppository. There was definitely a difference in his poop (almost like I could see what poop was caused by the Good Start he had been on, and what poop was from the Alimentum). He did spit up less yesterday (maybe 2-3 spitups throughout the day instead of 10-15)...
DH and I also seem to have the train of thought that if Alimentum works, it might not necessarily mean he NEEDS a hypoallergenic formula, it just means something works better for him than Good Start (yes, ped made the jump from GS to Alimentum instead of suggesting we try other formulas like Gentlease, Similac Sensitive, etc.). Would you agree with that?
We are hoping for a ped GI referral and also allergy testing to be done as a result of this Friday's follow-up. He has no blood in his stool or rashes, or anything to indicate an allergy besides constipation and reflux (and POSSIBLE mucus in his stool--his stool is not runny/watery but does seem to have what looks like mucus in it).
Re: How long to see results with hypoallergenic formula?
I think it can take anywhere between 2 and 4 weeks to fully get it out of her system. You might see a difference imminently but i would wait couple of weeks before fully seeing if it's working or not.
I agree.. it may not be that he needs a hypoallergenic formula, it just means he's tolerating it better. BUT, a hypoallergenic formula is much more gentler than many of the regular formulas and broken down more.. so it may be that your child's tummy can't handle a regular formula.
