Multiples

At first I was shocked...

...when my OB told me he only wants me gaining 15lbs my whole pregnancy Indifferent but seeing that the number on the scale has gone down consistently every week since I got pregnant I think gaining 15lbs is going to be the hard part! I'm down 10lbs since I found out 4 1/2 weeks ago I was pregnant (on top of the 20 I lost while dieting before I got pregnant). The nausea is kicking my a$$!! I know it's been posted before but is anyone losing instead of gaining?? IF so when did you start gaining?? TIA

p.s I'm what you would consider plus size so I'm assuming that's why he wants me to gain so little on top of the high BP risks. If I keep going the way I am I won't be plus size for long! LoL

Edit: This is a P&R. Time to get my BBQ on! Have a good 4th everyone!

Re: At first I was shocked...

  • Are you seeing a MFM? 15 lbs sounds like too little for a twin pregnancy, even if you are plus size. Do you have Dr. Luke's book? What does her chart say you should gain? My OB's partner originally told me 20lbs, but when I met with MFM, she told me to gain 55lbs. Luke's book tells you what to eat too which is really important, especially if you're only able to eat a little from the m/s. Hopefully you start to feel better soon. It's hard to focus on weight gain when you constantly feel sick. Hang in there!

  • If I were you I would just try to eat healthy and not worry about the number on the scale.

  • I lost 10 lbs in my first trimester and didnt start gaining till about 20 weeks prego.....and I was 5'7" and 145 pre-pregnancy.  Everything turned out fine!  My Dr. didnt seem concerned at any point....prolly because the boys were growing just fine!  Just eat healthy, frequent meals and drink lots of water.  If you do that, then like PP said, I wouldnt worry about the number on the scale unless your dr is worried....

Im also on the plus side and I gained almost 70 pounds and my OB was not at all concerned with my weight gain also 2 weeks post partum I had lost all but 7 pounds of PG weight so it was all baby, I pretty much followed Dr Lukes book and ate lots of healthy stuff.... GL to you

  • I lost 10lbs up until 16 weeks, then I started gaining around 18 weeks. I ended up gaining 63lbs and I was 200lbs when I got pregnant. My doctor never expressed concern and 75% was gone by my 10 day check up and all was gone by my 6 week check up. I would def. talk to your MFM because 15lbs sounds impossible to me with multiples.

  • I am also plus size and have gotten mixed messages from the doctors in my OB group. One told me I didn't really need to gain anything. Another told me that 15lbs for the whole pregnancy would be ideal but also told me that as of my 28w check up my 15lb weight gain so far was great. The two others haven't really given any feedback or guidance about weight, so I assume I'm doing ok. I use Dr. Luke's book as a guide, as she has different suggestions based on your starting BMI. Talk to your doctor about your concerns and what s/he thinks of Dr. Luke's recommendations.

  • Thank you for all your replies! I think I'm going to have to run and get that book this week. I've seen it mentioned a lot around here. I feel like 15lbs wouldn't be enough esp. if I have 2 5lb babies plus their placentas and then water weight? It just seems unrealistic to me.

I don't see a MFM, just my OB. I guess I'll be looking into that, too! I hope I'm eating healthy enough, I'm turned off by most meat but very much love my veggies... and carbsEmbarrassed

Again, thank you for your replies and advice! I've got a lot to do and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions soonSmile

  • Definitely focus on healthy food. Carbs are ok - you do need to get lots of energy! Monitor how you feel, and adjust accordingly.

I thought I was gaining really well and would hit 20 lbs by 20 weeks (per Dr. Luke), and based on the scale at home, but the doctor just told me at my last appointment I'd only gained 12 pounds by 20 weeks - and she was ok with that. You're going to burn off a lot of what you eat because you're developing your babies - focus on eating healthy stuff often, and you won't have to worry so much about putting on difficult-to-remove weight. More weight is definitely a plus for the babies later in the pregnancy, but keep your focus on healthy stuff and just build as best you can.

Honestly I was shocked that I could eat so much more and I wasn't gaining weight. Obviously I have a bump and my boobs have grown, but the rest of my body is basically where it was before, so I think that all my weight right now is in the baby-focused parts of me. So I agree with you that it's strange to find out that you're not just going to easily pack on the pounds from the very start. Once those babies really start to grow your weight will increase! Keep your habits healthy and you'll get them off to a good start.

    Yes

Thank you! That helps a lot! I like to think I'm eating healthy...I was never a junk food person and I definitely can't stomach any fast food! My doctor said the same thing "You're going to burn off a lot of what you eat because you're developing your babies" so I guess that's why I haven't gained anything yet. Hopefully things start to turn around soon. I'm loving all this advice, who needs a doctor?! lol j.k

Thank you for the reassurance! I feel much better about things now and I'm going to go get that book this weekendSmile
