Cloth Diapering

2 in diapers!?

DS will be 18 months when #2 arrives, and although it would be awesome to have him potty trained, I'm sure that is wishful thinking.

Our stash is 100% OS pocket diapers. We have about 24 I think.

If you have 2 in diapers, how many do you have? Do you have a mixture of types?

What would you suggest I do...
1) buy a significant amount of additional diapers
2) put new LO in disposables until #1 is potty trained (we didn't start CDs with #1 until he was 4 months)
3) make do with only 24 diapers for 2 kiddos
4) something else?

Re: 2 in diapers!?

  • We have a big mix now, but we started off with mostly all pockets.  DS and DD are almost 18 months apart.  I thought 34 would be enough for two, but it wasn't.  Now we have too many (around 70), and hopefully DS will potty train soon, but I find it's better to have too many than too few.  If you're already doing a diaper wash, it's just easier to have both in cloth, at least that's what I've found.

  • You may very well have another year of diapering child #1 after your new baby arrives, so I would just expand the stash.

We have mostly AI2's and fitteds.

  • We got a surprise BFP when LO was 11 months old, so we were a little nervous! We ordered more diapers and tried to order so that we could be like "The purple, blue, and red diapers are baby A, the green, yellow, and orange ones are baby B" We REALLY don't want to go back to disposables! Unfortunately we miscarried so we won't be trying our theory out. GL
  • I would just buy more CDs. Look out for seconds sales and maybe get a dozen prefolds to pad your stash for cheap. You'll still save compared to sposies, and you'll be washing them already anyway. Looks like you have plenty of time to build up your supply for two in CDs. :)

  • I had 2 in diapers for 4 months. A reasonable stashe would be 48-50 diapers, if you want to wash every other day. If you want to do it cheaply, get prefolds for the newbie. You could probably get prefold and covers for under $75. If you want to have more pockets, buy used.

  • I will have 2 in CD's.

G wears OS pockets and the occasional econobum.

I bought the new baby about 20 NB/S size AIO's and I have some prefolds and covers. All in all for the new baby I spent about $150. Her dipes are WAHM or used. I figure this will get her through until she is big enough for his OS. There is no way a OS will fit a NB even on the smallest rise.

  • Thanks all.

I'm definitely waiting awhile to buy anything but the thought was just a little overwhelming! I switched to CDs primarily because "we'd only have to use these 24 diapers and never buy again for all of our kids." Well, not so much! ;)

I've never had luck with prefolds but maybe I need to practice a little more.

    I appreciate the advice!
