Ok, here is the quick backstory: My nephew is a super dumb young kid. His GF has 4 kids (she is only 21...) They need to get their kids taken away for real. DCFS has been there a few times but hasn't done anything, so my SIL (nephews mom) takes their DD (the only kid that is his and the youngest-she is 6 months old) a couple times a week. Today, my SIL tells me how bad things are: B/c they don't want to buy diapers they are still putting this 16lb baby in size 1 diapers!, they bottles are always MOLDY (Aunt always goes and buys new bottles b/c they are too gross to clean!) and they were too lazy to go to WIC to get formula, so they just fed their baby powdered milk.. are just a few things she has told me. She also was talking about how she doesn't have any clothes for her at her house.. b/c they don't send her with any.. SO I went thru my son's stuff (we have so many clothes, its crazy!) and sent her home w/ blankets, toys, books, 3 bottles (I didn't have many since I BF) pretty much whatever I could. I also gave her the last of my size 2 diapers.. Now to my question (sorry for it being long)
I want to have a charity diaper/bottle party for my SIL, and for the LO. (SIL is on a pretty tight budget..) So I was thinking about having a BBQ and doing a diaper raffle (size 2 and up) and asking ppl to bring a bottle. I'd have prizes and other things... Do you think this is tacky? Would you come to something like this and buy stuff for someone you didn't know?? My heart just breaks for this little girl. Just trying to see if this is even something anyone would do...
Again sorry for the length..
Re: helping w/ a diaper party?
If you were my good, good friend, I would probably come for the party and the company, and bring the diapers/bottles, because you asked. Beyond that, no. It's not like they are a real charity case, you know? Just a couple of kids with kids.
My other thought would be what the return on investment would be as far as diapers go? If everyone brings diapers, how many would bring a big case, or a small pack? A few diapers only get you so far. Would you get more value in diapers if you threw the party, rather than take all the money you would spend throwing the party and buying some diapers yourself to help out? Unless you just want to throw a party, which is fun, too. I love good company.
