Two Under 2

How much time did your DH take off with #2

Dh took off about 2 weeks after the birth of DD1.  He's considering taking off 2-3 weeks this time around.

We plan to send DD1 back to daycare after the first weekor so, so that she can get back to her routine.  Do you think it would be helpful for DH to stay home another week to help out?

  • I would think it would be a good opportunity for the 3 of you to bond while your older DD is at daycare.

  • 3 weeks, and it was too much time. I think it has to do with the fact that DD was an insanely easy baby that slept 24/7. I say do 3 weeks though, and have him go back earlier if thats an option. Better to have too much time that not enough.

  • 2 weeks.  The military gives two weeks of paid paternity leave so we took that time.  It was enough.

  • With DS it was 9 weeks, but thats the nature of his job (21days on/off) so he took the 3 wks in the middle off, no pay. It was great for adjusting to mommyhood.

With DD it worked that he was home for 4 wks, 2 before DD came and 2 after. It was hard when he went back when she was 2 wks and I had an 18 month old..but that was bc he was GONE for 3 wks. If he had gone to a regular job I would say having him home 7-10 days would be fine.

  • A week and that included the time I spent in the hospital. This time, I doubt he'll take that much time (officially) because he has a different job so he can work from home for a bit too. He won't be able to help as much when he works from home, but it will be a good transition for us.

  • I had a c/s so I was in the hospital for four days, then H took off the first week that we were home from the hospital. Honestly, I didn't need him longer than that. It was nice when he was around to help, but I was fine without him. The newborn slept a ton so other than being tired from night feedings, it wasn't much different than being alone with DD1, at first.

He scheduled two weeks off, but they couldn't leave him alone so he ended up going back three days early.
  • Both times he swore up and down he'd take two weeks off and both times it ended up being one. I know it's not really his fault but I'm still kind of bitter about it! lol.

  • He was off 2 weeks which was very nice.
  • DH was home for 5 weeks (1 week paid paternity + 4 weeks vacation). For #2, he will probably do 1 week paid paternity + 3 weeks vacation - so for 4 weeks total. It was awesome to have him for 5 weeks. Great bonding time.
